As a devoted comic book enthusiast, it’s no secret that I’ve been following Marvel’s characters for quite some time now. And guess what? One of those characters, The Sentry, has finally graced our screens in the Marvel Cinematic Universe! Lewis Pullman brilliantly brought this character to life, and with his introduction, I can’t help but wonder about a potentially larger role for The Sentry in the future.
In the year 2000, the character made its debut in “The Sentry #1”, and was brought to life by Jenkins with artwork by Jae Lee. The character is named Robert Reynolds, but he’s often referred to as Bob within the Thunderbolts team. However, this isn’t his only identity; he’s also known as The Void. This character initially caused problems in the Thunderbolts team, but according to the creator, that’s just a taste of what he’s truly capable of.
In simpler terms, the creator elaborated, “As it is often said, ‘The villain sees themselves as the protagonist in their own story.’ They believe they are the savior. In the case of The Sentry, I presented him as a heroic act, perhaps the ultimate one – he sacrifices his heroic status to save the world. This is an extraordinary display of compassion because he’s addicted. He yearns to be The Sentry. He’s a powerful superhero, but he understands that The Sentry and The Void create a dangerous entity. So, he goes back to being simple Bob.
If The Sentry saves a plane with 137 people on board, then The Void will cause the deaths of 137 people somewhere else, like a mine collapse, maintaining a balance – one life saved equals one life lost.” So, Bob realizes that no matter what he does, if he rescues people, others will die in return.
Thunderbolts* Post-Credits Scene Teased The Sentry Will Be Back
Thunderbolts* represents the second Marvel Studios release in 2023, following Captain America: Brave New World. Moreover, it brings an end to Phase Five, which began back in 2023 with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. As we move into Phase Six this summer with The Fantastic Four: First Steps, one of the two post-credit scenes in Thunderbolts* hints at a potential link to the upcoming movie.
Thunderbolts* is playing out in theaters.
