A more peaceful approach is always preferable in real life compared to the portrayals seen on movies and TV shows. People seem to find satisfaction in watching characters who break laws being punished, which has led movie studios and television networks to produce stories that cater to this preference. Over time, this entertainment has improved greatly on small screens. Shows such as NCIS and 24 set the stage by delivering high-octane action scenes, and since then, other creators have followed suit.
As we’ve reached the midpoint of the 2020s decade, there have been numerous impressive television shows that have graced our screens. While many of these series are known for their high-intensity action scenes like fights and shootouts, they offer much more than just violence. In fact, a significant number of them intertwine this violence with various other genres, such as crime, espionage, and military strategy. Here’s a rundown of the crème de la crème that stand out.
In this version, I have attempted to make the text more conversational and easy-to-understand by using phrases like “graced our screens” instead of “treated to,” and “intertwine” instead of “combine.” Additionally, I replaced “sits at the top of the mountain so far” with “crème de la crème that stand out,” for a more natural flow.

‘Echo 3’ (2022)
In the film titled “Echo 3“, we find Amber, a scientist specializing in psychedelics for PTSD treatment in Colombia, being taken captive. Her husband, Prince, and her brother Bambi, who are both skilled U.S. Army operatives, embark on a mission to rescue her. However, the rescue operation proves difficult as they encounter complex political issues and clash with personal disagreements along the way.
Family First
In this production, Luke Evans finds it effortless to excel, and his performance is simply captivating. His fellow actors equally deliver strong performances, particularly during the portrayal of family and romantic dynamics. The action scenes are masterfully choreographed, rivaling those found in top-tier military dramas, while the cinematography provides a balance of tension and delight.
Luke Evans handles his role with ease and gives another stellar performance. His co-stars don’t disappoint either, especially when it comes to depicting relationships. The action scenes are amazingly done, as good as you’d find in well-reviewed military dramas, and the camera work keeps you engaged, even though the characters are under stress.

‘Weak Hero’ (2022 – 2025)
Following the storyline of the titled webtoon, “Weak Hero” centers around the character of Park Ji-hoon as the clever Yeon Si-eun. Instead of resorting to physical strength, he employs his intelligence and keen observation skills to evade school bullies. Navigating life’s challenges becomes less daunting when he forges friendships with the strongest student in his class and an assemblyman’s son.
Not so Weak
This heartfelt homage to the hardships of school life masterfully intertwines somber authenticity with delightful everyday instances. It’s difficult not to adore Ji-hoon, not just for his exceptional acting, but also for his character’s courage. Weak Hero is rich in deeply nuanced characters and precious scenes galore, so prepare yourself for an unforgettable experience.

‘Gangs of London’ (2020 – Present)
The series Gangs of London centers around the power vacuums that arise following the assassination of London’s most influential crime figure. While his son attempts to maintain control, rival groups sense an opportunity and start making their moves. In the end, who will seize power?
Criminally Underrated
In this vibrant, action-packed television series based on the game produced by London Studio, creator Gareth Evans (famously known for The Raid) employs stylish violence to narrate a heartwarming and complex tale about hardened criminals from the underworld. These characters are not only tough but also expressive in their own way, leaving no ambiguity regarding the emotional strain of criminal life. Evans spares little in terms of sugar-coating, offering an unflinching portrayal of a world consumed by destruction. Be prepared for the shocking ambush at the remote mansion in Season 1.

‘Paris Has Fallen’ (2024)
The movie “Paris Has Fallen” revolves around a series of terrorist attacks in Paris orchestrated by Jacob Pearce (Sean Harris), a disgruntled ex-French Foreign Legion soldier seeking revenge against the government for past wrongs. Our protagonists, an MI6 agent and a French security officer, join forces to thwart him. But can they successfully track down this cunning fugitive?
No Butler, No Problem
The action series presents an insightful analysis of television style and serves as an elaborate allegory for political wrongdoings. By blending dramatic elements with stylishly choreographed action scenes, its creator, Howard Overman, infuses it with a vibrant visual appeal and a luster that’s hard to find nowadays. To sum up, it’s on par with the Gerard Butler films in terms of action, but offers an extra emotional depth for those who appreciate more than just gunfights.

‘Special Ops: Lioness’ (2023 – Present)
As a cinephile, I’m eagerly anticipating the latest production from Taylor Sheridan’s stable – “Special Ops: Lioness”. This military action thriller revolves around a top-secret CIA operation masterminded by Joe McNamara, portrayed by Zoe Saldaña. The Lionesses, a formidable team of female operatives, are at the forefront, executing most of the mission’s critical tasks. Of course, there’s a supporting cast of burly men in green to lend their muscle when needed.
High Stakes, High Rewards
Zoe Saldaña, an exceptional actress, skillfully expresses her internal emotions, both joyful and conflicted, without resorting to overdramatic performances. The rest of the cast delivers their parts flawlessly. Notably, Nicole Kidman and Morgan Freeman excel in their prominent roles. Despite traversing well-trodden counter-terrorist themes, the series maintains a sense of delight due to its captivating storylines and missions.

‘The Continental: From the World of John Wick’ (2023)
In the TV show titled “The Continental“, we get a glimpse into the past of the character Winston Scott, played by Colin Woodell, who is famously known for running The Continental hotel in the John Wick films. This series, set in an alternate 1970s timeline, illustrates how Winston ascended to his role as manager of the New York branch.
The History of a Safe Haven
The spinoff exhibits a unique blend of familiar action tropes intertwined with gritty underworld themes, resulting in an exhilarating and intellectually stimulating series that rivals the cinematic franchise. Despite Mel Gibson seemingly being misplaced, his fellow actors effectively compensate for any perceived shortcomings. Above all, the car chases and combat scenes are nothing short of breathtaking.
4
‘The Night Agent’ (2023 – Present)
Peter Sutherland from “The Night Agent” initially works as a minor FBI agent, manning an infrequently used emergency line situated deep within the White House basement. However, he unexpectedly finds himself right in the thick of things, uncovering a massive government conspiracy that involves a traitor among the ranks. Following his successful completion of several perilous assignments, he is eventually elevated to the position of Night Action field agent.
Tracing Shadowy Figures
Up for the Best Action Series at the Critics’ Choice Super Award, The Night Agent is an entertaining series marked by intricate dialogues filled with spy jargon, compelling character development, and, indeed, numerous gunfights. There are clear influences from 24, but the show carves out its unique identity by maintaining a slightly more grounded feel and portraying the protagonist as less invincible and more relatable.
3
‘Daredevil: Born Again’ (2025)
The story “Daredevil: Born Again” commences with a common thread among superheroes – retirement. Matt Murdock, a lawyer who’s blind but possesses extraordinary senses (portrayed by Charlie Cox), decides to step away from his role as the masked vigilante, Daredevil. However, following the heartbreaking demise of a cherished friend, his perspective undergoes a significant change.
Donning the Mask Again
As a movie enthusiast, I must say that this comeback is an exhilarating blend, daringly concocted with the raw energy of city life, the tantalizing mystery of corporate machinations, and the political intrigue that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Of course, it’s not just about the action; it’s a heart-wrenching narrative of sorrow and vengeance, artfully woven into an emotional tapestry. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has delved into profound themes before, but never with such audacity and raw emotion. Praise be! If this is the direction we’re heading in, let Daredevil rise again and again!
2
‘The Day of the Jackal’ (2024 – Present)
In the storyline of “The Day of the Jackal,” which was originally depicted in Frederick Forsyth’s novel and the 1973 film adaptation, the character Lashana Lynch portrays MI6 agent Bianca Pullman as she pursues an evasive global assassin, referred to as the Jackal, played by Eddie Redmayne. This elusive individual often changes his appearance and identities, making it a challenging task to locate him.
A Slippery Killer
Intriguingly intense and subtly menacing, “The Day of the Jackal” stands as one of the most exceptional spy action thrillers ever produced. Its grand European settings and stylish costumes imbue this captivating tale with a Bond-esque atmosphere. Redmayne’s performance in this role is truly commendable, crafting a villain who seems surprisingly likable.
1
‘Reacher’ (2022 – Present)
In the television series Reacher, Alan Ritchson portrays the main character, a wandering ex-U.S. Army Military Police officer named Reacher who possesses an extraordinary personality and exceptional combat abilities. Along his travels across the country, he encounters a variety of ruthless felons.
The True Punisher
In a nod to classic action flicks, Reacher is brimming with witty escapades, intense brawls, and sharp-witted dialogue. Alan Ritchson oozes charisma in this role, yet it’s the intricate plots that truly captivate viewers. Although the villains may lack depth, the series more than makes up for it with numerous other engaging aspects. Be prepared for the unforgettable Season 3 finale fight between Reacher and Paulie, a scene destined to become iconic.
