Warning: SPOILERS for Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld are ahead!
Previously, it was believed that Asajj Ventress had perished since she met her end in the novel “Dark Disciple.” This storyline was based on an eight-episode arc from “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” that never materialized. However, Ventress was spotted alive and thriving in the third season episode “The Harbinger” of “Star Wars: The Bad Batch,” without any explanation provided for her resurrection. That mystery has now been resolved, thanks to the premiere of “Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld” on Disney+’s 2025 TV schedule. Nika Futterman, Ventress’ voice actress, has also shared her thoughts about this significant revelation with me.
The initial installment of Ventress’ “Tales of the Underworld” series, titled “A Way Forward,” resumes immediately following the events of “Dark Disciple.” Here, Quinlan Vos and Obi-Wan Kenobi are seen performing a burial ritual for Ventress in a gloomy pool on her native planet Dathomir. But after these two Jedi departed, the spectral presence of Mother Talzin, who previously led the Nightsisters, extended an offer of resurrection to Ventress’ spirit, which she gratefully accepted. When I asked Futterman about her reaction upon learning that this was how her Star Wars character would be reincarnated, she shared:
Of course, I was quite disheartened by the turn of events in the book. However, I could understand her actions due to the profound depth of love she displayed. Yet, I remained disheartened until I learned that she would return. At that point, I thought, ‘This is wonderful!’ Because in the universe of Star Wars, and particularly in the mystical realm of Asajj Ventress and the planet Dathomir, where miracles can occur and a character can be revived, I mused, ‘This is ideal. This is an ideal solution.’
In my Star Wars fandom journey, I fondly remember Asajj Ventress assisting Anakin Skywalker in uncovering Barriss Offee’s deceit during the climactic storyline of Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ fifth season. For those who may not have delved into the expansive universe of Dark Disciple, her reappearance in The Bad Batch might seem a bit unexpected. However, given that Dark Disciple is part of the official Star Wars canon, Ventress’ return was a loose end that needed to be addressed. It was truly a delight for voice actress Nika Futterman to revisit this character after such a long absence, and she was particularly satisfied with how her return was executed.

In the Star Wars universe, while the Force has long been a part of the franchise’s supernatural elements, The Clone Wars series pushed these boundaries with the mystical powers of the Nightsisters. Among their abilities was the power to resurrect the dead, and even after her death, Mother Talzin granted Asajj Ventress a chance at life once more. However, as noted by Nika Futterman, the specific details surrounding this event remain somewhat unclear.
At this point, we’re unsure about the specifics of what occurred. However, I pondered, ‘Why can’t we be the ones to orchestrate this event?’ Dave Filoni is incredibly talented and resourceful; he has the authority to make it happen. He can give the approval. And it seems he cares for her as deeply as we do. So, he agreed, ‘Alright, let’s reintroduce the character, and then we’ll share the story behind it all.’ It feels like magic!

In a recent interview, Andor Boss clarified the reasons behind recasting that iconic Star Wars character for Season 2. However, the absence of the original actor is palpable.
It’s clear we didn’t witness the specific events leading from when Ventress’ spirit consented to be resurrected, and waking up on Dathomir, and it might remain a mystery as to what exactly occurred there. However, it’s been established that for Ventress to regain life, she had to promise never to reunite with Quinlan Vos. Given their romantic relationship in the story Dark Disciple, breaking off ties with him must have been incredibly painful for her.
During “Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld,” Asajj Ventress nearly reconnected with Quinlan Vos. Through her new Jedi ally Lyco Strata, she discovered that Vos was overseeing a safe haven called “The Path” for those who had evaded Order 66 and were hiding from the Empire. Once she verified this information herself, Ventress decided to keep her distance, finding solace in knowing that Vos was safe.
Luckily for her, she wouldn’t have to persist in a lonely existence anymore, since Lyco abandoned The Path and chose instead to accompany Asajj Ventress on her travels. We’ll see if these two characters reappear in any upcoming Star Wars films or series. Ventress has been given another chance, and I hope Nika Futterman will get the opportunity to voice her again in future narratives.
