Kevin Feige Slams Marvel for Making the MCU Feel Like Homework—Here’s What’s Changing

Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, pointed out a significant challenge that he’s observed with numerous movies and series from the MCU’s recent years. Despite the MCU maintaining its position as the highest-earning franchise ever in cinema history and consistently releasing new content annually, it hasn’t experienced the same level of consistent triumph as it did in earlier times.

Kevin Feige expressed concerns that the Marvel Cinematic Universe might be becoming overly complex and challenging for viewers who haven’t been following the story closely, given the increased number of releases in recent years compared to earlier periods. With more titles being released during the Multiverse Saga in four years than the Infinity Saga managed in eleven, it can be quite overwhelming for those not familiar with most of the newer productions.

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Feige admitted to his colleagues that watching all the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) TV shows and movies has become more like completing homework rather than enjoying entertainment. This is partly because Disney, the MCU’s parent company, relies on Marvel to increase Disney+ subscribers and consistently deliver a connected series of superhero tales on their streaming platform.

Consequently, both the audience and Feige’s team found themselves overextended, leading to a decrease in the quality of several recent Marvel Cinematic Universe productions due to being spread too thin with resources.

At present, Marvel and its top management are making significant changes to revive the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) by implementing a major transformation. Instead of producing many movies and TV series each year, they plan to release approximately three films and two television shows annually, reducing their output. As a result, Kevin Feige is putting more emphasis on the MCU’s film lineup following the underwhelming box office performance of films such as “Captain America: Brave New World.

Furthermore, a previous employee at Marvel shed light on Disney’s current approach to filling Disney+ with an abundance of content. This individual noted that post-Infinity Saga, Disney’s strategy was predominantly focused on growth, growth, growth.

According to reports, Feige is said to have explained to his peers in the industry that he agreed to the plan due to his eagerness to release fresh tales and his desire to be a model “responsible corporate figure.

Despite the plan, it turned out to be quite burdensome for the studio. Feige found himself having to make numerous daily decisions as there were multiple showrunners and executives managing each new project. Moreover, he was often hard to reach for feedback on these projects, with some of his input becoming irrelevant due to the tight deadlines that needed to be met in order to release shows to the public.

In recent years, as mentioned by Jake Schreier, director of the film Thunderbolts, the approach changed. During discussions with Feige, they focused on making the movie accessible to audiences who hadn’t watched any other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies. Schreier explained, “For all the main characters, we aimed to begin anew.” This statement refers to several key characters who were last featured in various MCU projects.

2025 marks the last year when Marvel Studios will release such a large number of projects under Disney’s management, following the return of CEO Bob Iger, who replaced previous head Bob Chapek. In this year alone, we can expect three new films and six original series on Disney+. However, starting from 2026, the output of Marvel Cinematic Universe content is expected to decrease.

At the moment, I find myself eagerly joining the excitement as Marvel Studios unveils “Thunderbolts,” the concluding movie of Phase 5 within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), now gracing our screens. The charismatic Florence Pugh’s character, Yelena Belova, teams up with an intriguing group of outcasts in this film, to challenge the formidable Sentry, a villain known for being one of the most powerful adversaries in MCU lore.

How Will Kevin Feige & Marvel Studios Adjust Moving Forward

It appears that Marvel Studios is undergoing a significant shift in its approach, aiming for a more unified and organized release plan in the near future. This change may also mean that individual projects might not be as crucial for viewers to watch prior to their respective releases.

In Thunderbolts, we were given a comprehensive look at its main characters, ensuring fans were up-to-date with their Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) storylines as they stood before this point. This approach will prove crucial as we progress into Phase 6, a phase that could very well mark the most significant series of films in the franchise’s history.

In essence, the upcoming film titled “Avengers: Doomsday” plans to push boundaries with at least 27 confirmed actors representing characters from up to six or seven distinct universes. This trend is set to continue and potentially escalate in “Avengers: Secret Wars“, which is hinted to be the most monumental crossover event ever seen in comic-book cinema history.

Although many aspects of Phase 6 remain shrouded in secrecy, particularly concerning its release on Disney+, it’s anticipated that the content to follow will be more accessible and enjoyable for casual Marvel Cinematic Universe viewers.
