Nicolas Cage Hints at Exciting News for ‘National Treasure 3’ Fans!

Fans have eagerly speculated about the possibility of their favorite actor rejoining one of his cherished franchises for quite some time, but it appears they may need to exercise a little more patience. Recently, the actor expressed a somewhat hopeful yet still disappointing perspective on the likelihood of this event transpiring.

Currently, Nicolas Cage is featured in the film titled “The Surfer“, an exhilarating and erratic production that has garnered favorable reviews for the actor. During the promotion of this movie, he had a conversation with George Edelman from MovieWeb. Apart from discussing his present project, he also hinted at the prospect of Benjamin Franklin Gates embarking on another “national treasure” adventure in the coming days. When asked about this possibility, Cage replied:

“Don’t know. I do know that there’s been more chatter about it than normal.”

As a die-hard fan of the National Treasure franchise, I can’t help but cling to any shred of optimism about the third installment. However, one potential hurdle for this sequel could be Nicolas Cage’s packed schedule with numerous projects in the pipeline. Despite these challenges, it seems that National Treasure 3 is not entirely buried and may still see the light of day.

What Has Delayed ‘National Treasure 3’ for 2 Decades?

Initially, Nicolas Cage made his appearance in the movie “National Treasure” back in 2004, portraying Benjamin Franklin Gates, a character combining roles as a historian, codebreaker, and treasure seeker. Alongside a compact group of associates, he embarked on an exciting quest to unearth a secret Freemason treasure that had long been lost. Despite the movie’s substantial $100 million budget and some negative criticism from critics like Roger Ebert who compared it to a Monty Python production, it proved successful at the box office, earning a staggering $347 million. The sequel, “National Treasure: Book of Secrets,” was released in 2007, offering more international escapades for Cage’s character and generating even less favorable reviews but raking in an impressive $457 million at the box office.

Initially, it appeared as though another National Treasure film was imminent, but one never came to fruition. As far back as 2008, franchise director Jon Turteltaub hinted at future movies in the series, and Disney even registered several domain names related to the franchise. However, for a full decade, there was no movement on the third film, and by 2018, it was revealed that a script had been submitted to Disney, but they were not convinced enough to move forward with production.

2020 brought excitement among fans as they learned that National Treasure 3 was officially in development, featuring Chris Bremner’s script, Jerry Bruckheimer producing, and the original cast rejoining. But alas, things took an unexpected turn; the movie project got scrapped, replaced by a Disney+ series titled National Treasure: Edge of History, starring Lisette Olivera as Jess Valenzuela in the lead role. Unfortunately, this show was short-lived, ending after only one season. Fans have since been vocal about their desire to see Nicholas Cage reprise his role for a third movie once more.

Could fans soon see the long-awaited follow-up they’ve yearned for nearly twenty years? It remains uncertain, but with whispers of interest, Cage appears to be aware – sustaining a flicker of optimism in our hearts.
