Sims 4 Needs and Motives: How To Keep Your Sims Happy And Alive

In the same manner as real-life individuals, the characters in The Sims 4 have essential requirements that must be met for their happiness and wellbeing. Failure to do so might lead to unpleasant situations, potentially severe ones like their demise. Fortunately, managing your sim’s needs is not overly complex – our digital inhabitants are simpler than real people. However, understanding a few key points can greatly improve your experience. Here, we will explain how needs function and provide tips on how to cater to them effectively, either through activities your sim engages in or permanent lifetime rewards that let you bypass them entirely. Let’s get started!

The Sims 4 Needs list

Hunger

  • Solution: eat food
  • Related perks: Hardly Hungry and Forever Full

If your character doesn’t consume food, they will eventually feel hunger pangs. If they persist in refusing food until their hunger meter completely drains, they may face death by starvation or, in the case of a child, removal by Child Services and placement with another family. Given the severity of the situation, ensuring your character eats regularly is crucial because it’s the only essential need that can result in a sim’s demise if ignored. Therefore, remember to ensure your character gets their meals.

Two benefits await you that can significantly ease your experience of hunger. The “Hardly Hungry” perk (worth 4,000 reward points) will drastically slow down the speed at which your hunger meter decreases, while the “Forever Full” perk (10,000 reward points) ensures that your hunger gauge won’t deplete on its own.

Energy

  • Solution: sleep, drink caffeine
  • Related perks: Seldom Sleepy, Never Weary

One of the recurring challenges in human existence, much like yours, is the regular requirement for rest, and this applies equally to your simulated characters. Just as you, they too require periods of rest. If they’re overtired, their performance in any task will deteriorate, they’ll learn skills at a slower pace than normal, and they’ll have a higher risk of accidents while performing tasks such as rock climbing or building robots. The most effective way to recharge your energy levels is by sleeping. You can also opt for a quick energy boost with coffee, but remember, this is just a temporary fix – they’ll need to sleep eventually. Vampires, however, have an extra pair of options when it comes to resting: they can sleep in coffins or engage in dark meditation.

Luckily, the consequences for this situation aren’t too severe – if your character’s energy meter completely drains, they’ll simply collapse on the ground and be alright except for having a temporary bad mood. However, there’s one major risk to consider: If your character runs out of energy while swimming and collapses, they could potentially drown.

In this game, there are two rewards linked to energy efficiency that can be unlocked. The first one, called “Seldom Sleepy,” is worth 4,000 points and makes your character’s energy meter deplete at a much slower rate. The second reward, named “Never Weary,” costs 10,000 points and eliminates the need for your character to sleep altogether. Similarly, a fully upgraded vampire character will not require sleep, but only to replenish their vampire energy levels.

Bladder

  • Solution: use a toilet
  • Related perks: Steel Bladder

Once your character finishes eating, the byproduct from the food needs to be disposed of, ideally in a toilet. This action refills the bladder gauge. However, if they don’t use the toilet in time, there’s a chance they might soil themselves, making them dirty, smelly, and ashamed.

1. The Steel Bladder aspiration bonus awards 2,000 points, allowing your character’s bladder gauge to drain at a much reduced rate.

2. The Hardly Hungry and Forever Full traits are beneficial for managing the bladder requirement, as this need decreases only when your sim consumes food; consequently, they won’t have to visit the restroom if they never eat.

3. Alternatively, you can tackle the issue by acquiring the Shameless reward worth 2000 points, which enables your sim to become comfortable with soiling themselves.

Hygiene

  • Solution: take a shower, brush your teeth
  • Related perks: Antiseptic, Forever Fresh

As your Sim engages in daily activities, they’ll progressively accumulate dirt and odor. This process speeds up significantly with intense activities such as exercise, intimate moments like WooHoo, or accidents like soiling their pants. A quick bath instantly addresses this issue, while brushing teeth or washing hands provides a minor improvement to the hygiene level. If you own the Laundry Day expansion pack and have installed laundry appliances on your Sim’s residential lot, they’ll also need to clean their clothes, which, similar to their bodies, will get dirty over time.

You can lessen the requirement for cleanliness by utilizing two incentives: Antiseptic (worth 3,000 points) slows down the depletion of your hygiene gauge, and Forever Fresh (8,000 points) ensures that you’ll never need to bathe again.

Fun

  • Solution: do things your sim enjoys
  • Related perks: Carefree

Just as you require leisure activities to stay happy and content, so do your sims. If they don’t engage in enjoyable activities, they may become anxious and irritable. Fortunately, the remedy is quite straightforward: Your sim needs to participate in activities they enjoy. The possibilities are vast, ranging from playing video games, interacting with pets or children, competing in sports or chess, to hobbies like fishing, swimming, or exercising. As long as your sim enjoys these activities, they’ll satisfy the ‘fun’ requirement. If you’re unsure about your sim’s preferences, you can check their profile during the Create-a-Sim phase.

In most cases, you won’t need to worry about managing this situation, as your self-governing sim will usually take care of it on their own due to their inherent tendency to seek out entertaining activities.

As a gaming enthusiast, if you prefer your Sims to always be in a dull and monotonous state, go ahead and grab the Carefree aspiration reward (worth 2,000 points). This perk ensures that your Sim will never feel tense, thus nullifying any potential excitement or enjoyment derived from a low fun meter.

Social

  • Solution: talk to other sims, or the toilet
  • Related perks: Independent, Needs No One

Sims, like us, thrive on social interaction, and having time with others significantly impacts their well-being. Overly depleting a sim’s social energy can lead to deep sadness and melancholy, prompting them to seek companionship. Engaging in face-to-face interactions with other sims or inviting them over for fun is the most straightforward approach, but it’s not the only one. Communicating with others via digital means, such as computers or social media, can also boost your sim’s social energy. For the particularly solitary sim, there’s even an option to buy a talking toilet in build mode and make friends with it if they prefer avoiding human interaction altogether.

The self-reliant bonus of 2,000 points can significantly slow down the decrease in your social needs, while the reward of 5,000 points called “Needs No One” will completely eliminate this need altogether.

Vampire vulnerabilities

  • Solutions: carry an umbrella, and drink plasma from sims, fruit or plasma packs
  • Related perks: Tamed Thirst, Sun Resistance

Vampires possess two distinct requirements unlike ordinary sims: They must consume plasma from other sims instead of food (which takes care of their hunger), and they cannot stand in direct sunlight or they’ll weaken and eventually perish. Dealing with sunlight isn’t complicated; just ensure your vampire sim always carries an umbrella, and it will automatically use it when venturing out during the daytime.

purchasing plasma packs on the computer or gathering plasma fruit from a plasma tree. These trees can be found in Forgotten Hollow, and a single plasma fruit is enough to cultivate more plasma trees of your own.

The tree of abilities for the vampire character offers benefits to overcome these two weaknesses, albeit requiring some time to unlock. At the highest level, the skill Tamed Thirst ensures that your character will never experience any negative effects from thirst. Additionally, Sun Resistance, a skill achieved at the fourth level with three stages, allows your character to walk during daylight.

Mermaid hydration

  • Solution: drink water, bathe, swim
  • Related perks: Forever Fresh

In their humanlike form, mermaids require constant moisture due to their unique hydration needs, similar to how regular hygiene is important for other beings. However, even though the game uses a “hygiene” meter, it’s not about cleanliness but rather preventing dryness. If your mermaid sims get too dry, they will become tense, irritable, and unable to use their special mermaid abilities. But don’t worry, it’s easy to keep them hydrated! Mermaids can boost their hydration levels by participating in water-based activities, excluding hot tub sessions. So, you can bathe them, let them swim, or make sure they drink plenty of water.

The Everlasting Clean advantage, which addresses your ongoing hygiene requirements, will similarly address the hydration needs of mermaids as well.
