Elden Ring Nightreign Could Be Amazing – But One Huge Issue Could Ruin It

After viewing today’s introductory trailer, I’m completely hooked on Elden Ring Nightreign in terms of gameplay. Every aspect shown appears outstanding: the characters, the battles with bosses, the map layout, and so much more. Granted, it doesn’t offer the entirely seamless multiplayer experience I’ve longed for from Elden Ring, but it seems incredibly close. At a minimum, it promises to be an entertaining experience.

In my opinion, Elden Ring Nightreign has one significant hindrance that makes me hesitant about preordering it. This single aspect is keeping me from jumping in right away and I’m more inclined to wait a few weeks post-release before playing. It’s an issue that might not be addressed promptly, but the early phase of Nightreign’s launch will reveal whether this obstacle could affect its longevity.

Nightreign’s Multiplayer Looks Great

Chaotic Co-Op Action

This morning, the enticing ten-minute trailer for “Elden Ring Nightreign” was unveiled live, and I must say, it does an impressive job of promoting the game. The trailer showcases various Nightfarers (playable characters), offering a glimpse into each of their unique abilities and specialties. Each character boasts a distinct design, both visually and in terms of gameplay mechanics. Among them, The Duchess particularly piques my interest due to her high-mobility, stealth-centric playstyle which aligns with my preferred gaming style, despite it being quite unlike my current “Elden Ring” character build.

If you’ve chanced upon this piece, chances are you’re already familiar with the formidable boss fights From Software is known for – battles against challenging adversaries that have etched their name in gaming history. Notably, several iconic foes from the Dark Souls franchise, among others, will resurface in Nightreign. I can hardly contain my excitement to witness how these enemies have been re-tuned for cooperative play, or to share the exhilaration of confronting them alongside allies.

What really piques my curiosity is the long-term playability aspect of this game. The combination of roguelike and battle royale mechanics, where each playthrough offers unique encounters with randomized enemies and loot, seems intriguing. However, what truly catches my attention is that Nightreign appears to feature a diverse range of unexpected events in the world for increased unpredictability. The trailer showcases instances such as a meteor striking the ground, creating a chasm for some players, and an Omen boss falling from the sky onto others, initiating a tough fight on a narrow path.

Occasions such as these often foster an exciting kind of impromptu fun.Which is always appreciated in multiplayer games, it can lead to shared hardships, surprising victories against overwhelming odds, or at the very least some hearty chuckles. Given that the game appears to be a continuation of Elden Ring’s legacy and hails from the renowned developer FromSoft, I would usually be ready for a day-one purchase of Nightreign. Yet, there’s one minor aspect holding me back from making the purchase.

Nightreign Doesn’t Have Crossplay

You Can Only Play With Others On The Same Console Line

Unfortunately, it was confirmed (and we had suspected this before the overview trailer) that Elden Ring Nightreign does not support crossplay. The game will launch simultaneously across PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. However, players using different platforms won’t be able to play together – for instance, PC users can’t connect with console gamers, and Xbox players cannot join PS5 games.

I find myself in a dilemma, as many players share this predicament. Some of my friends prefer to play Nightreign on PC, while others prefer the PS5 version. Buying the game twice isn’t an option for me, but I don’t want to exclude any friends from playing together. This indecision, stemming partly from myself and partly from concern about potential negative consequences, has left me stuck. Specifically, the lack of crossplay could potentially harm Nightreign in the long run.

Elden Ring Didn’t Need Crossplay – Will It Work For Nightreign?

The Two Are Less Alike Than You Think

It’s true that Elden Ring didn’t include crossplay support, yet it still managed to be successful. Crossplay wasn’t a fundamental aspect of the game, but the cooperative mode is quite popular among its fanbase. Many players have fond memories of battling challenging bosses with friends by their side or of watching Let Me Solo Them cause chaos among the Shardbearers of the Lands Between.

While both games offer elements of cooperative gameplay, Elden Ring is primarily designed as a solo adventure with occasional chances for cooperation. In contrast, Nightreign seems to emphasize its cooperative mode more extensively.

Instead of playing Nightreign on your own all the time, it was designed primarily for group play. While you can enjoy it alone, the true magic lies in sharing the unpredictable, hilarious moments with others.

It’s unlikely that the absence of crossplay will lead to an absolute catastrophe for Nightreign, given its status as an Elden Ring spinoff. Due to this connection, it has inherent appeal and is likely to draw a substantial following right from the start. However, I do feel that not incorporating crossplay might be a missed opportunity, and could potentially create more issues for Elden Ring Nightreign in the future as the initial hype subsides.
