NBC News is keen on participating in a game that hasn’t traditionally caught the attention of the country’s most prominent television news providers.
This weekend, as NBC Sports gears up for the Kentucky Derby broadcast, the digital arm of NBC News, NBCNews.com, will offer a comprehensive sports hub. This hub includes content from NBC Sports, access to their free ad-supported streaming channel, and sports news from a dedicated sports team that NBC News has been developing. Additionally, sports analyst Steve Kornacki will provide explanatory pieces. The sports hub can also be found within the NBC News mobile app.
Rebecca Blumenstein, president of editorial for NBC News, shares that there’s more to anticipate. She explains, “We plan to merge the extensive sports knowledge and unique content from NBC Sports with the editorial prowess and broad reach of NBC News to create a compelling sports section on NBCNews.com. Given the increasing impact of sports on American culture, this partnership is timely as the fascination with major leagues, events, personalities, and moments has never been higher.
At television broadcasters, sports news coverage is typically managed by their dedicated sports departments. While local broadcasts usually have a consistent news anchor for sports updates, there’s seldom an interruption from the likes of David Muir on shows like “World News Tonight” to provide daily scores. Providing such updates might discourage viewers from moving to ESPN – similar to ABC News, which is part of The Walt Disney Company – and watching an entire hour of “Sports Center.
Over the past few years, cable news networks haven’t given much focus to sports programming as they once did. For instance, CNN used to prioritize sports significantly, featuring a nightly show called “Sports Tonight” hosted by Nick Charles. In an earlier timeframe, CNN even established a sports-centric news network, CNN/SI. Additionally, Fox News Media has experimented with sports content, debuting a documentary on the University of Alabama’s Crimson Tide in February for its Fox Nation streaming service.
With sports programming playing a growing role in traditional media’s financial health, especially for networks like NBC, there could be additional motivations to introduce a fresh game plan. For instance, NFL football games currently air on Sunday nights for NBC, and soon, thanks to a new partnership with the NBA, they will also broadcast basketball up to two times per week (and potentially a third time on Peacock streaming platform). Come February, NBC is set to offer extensive Winter Olympics coverage along with a Super Bowl.
Other NBC News channels are attempting to keep up with the action. On “Today,” co-hosts Craig Melvin and Savannah Guthrie have shared about an initiative to incorporate more sports into the show, aligning with NBC’s partnerships with the NFL and NBA. Additionally, Melvin has been involved in Olympics coverage and is anticipated to participate again for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Milan next year.
In recent times, CNBC has shifted its attention towards sports, introducing a specialized section dedicated to the business aspects of sports. This sector encompasses a weekly newsletter, events, data analysis, and documentaries. Additionally, it offers unique content such as these. It’s important to note that this initiative is distinct from NBC News, and it’s expected to continue operating independently. By year-end, CNBC is among the assets planned for separation into a new publicly traded company.
NBC News has established a dedicated sports editorial unit. Previously with The Athletic, Greg Rosenstein now leads this team, while Rohan Nadkarni, who was previously at Sports Illustrated, is also part of it. Additionally, Andrew Grief, a former sports journalist for the Los Angeles Times, contributes to this new venture.
On May 17th, I’m thrilled to be part of NBC News as we delve into the Preakness Stakes. As Blumenstein puts it, “We can’t wait to keep the momentum going!
