‘Harry Potter’ Series Is ‘Not Secretly Being Infused’ With J.K. Rowling’s Anti-Trans Beliefs, Says HBO Boss: ‘If You Want to Debate Her, You Can Go on Twitter’

Casey Bloys, HBO’s head of content, recently clarified on “The Town” podcast that the upcoming television series based on J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” books will not reflect her controversial opinions about the transgender community. Both HBO and the new cast have faced criticism for collaborating with Rowling, who persistently shares posts perceived as transphobic on social media. She also frequently targets her critics and attacks public figures, such as criticizing John Oliver’s comments on trans athletes.

Regarding Rowling’s opinions about the trans community and its potential impact on the show, Bloys stated: “We have a series on HBO from her called ‘C.B. Strike,’ which we produce with the BBC. It seems evident that these are her personal political beliefs. She has the right to hold them. The ‘Harry Potter’ series does not secretly incorporate any such views. Last year, Bloys revealed at a press conference that J.K. Rowling played an extremely active role in choosing showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod for the “Harry Potter” TV series. He further mentioned that her controversial views on transgender individuals have not impacted the casting or employment of writers or production team members for the show. A representative from the network stated to EbMaster at the time that Rowling’s input to Warner Bros. Discovery as a whole has been incredibly valuable.

Last month, HBO officially announced the initial cast for their upcoming “Harry Potter” series. John Lithgow was chosen to play Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer will portray Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu is set as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost has been cast as Rubeus Hagrid. Following the announcement, Lithgow shared with The Times of London that he was taken aback by the negative response. A friend of his sent him an open letter urging him to reconsider participating in the series due to J.K. Rowling’s involvement.

Lithgow expressed, ‘What’s the relevance here?’ I’m puzzled as to how J.K. Rowling has incorporated this. I guess one day I’ll get the chance to speak with her, and I’m eager to discuss it with her.’

When asked if the backlash has made him reconsider the role, Lithgow said, “Oh, heavens no.”
