A fresh Marvel group has arrived, distinct from the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, X-Men, or Eternals. The team is none other than “Thunderbolts,” featuring Florence Pugh alongside a few other antiheroes and villains from the Marvel universe. This weekend, you can catch their debut at your local box office.
The movie featuring a superhero, helmed by Jake Schreier, has garnered $11.5 million during previews thus far. Predictions suggest that it could potentially earn between $70 million and $75 million in its domestic debut weekend, while globally, estimates place its total earnings at $160 million to $175 million.
The upcoming movie “Thunderbolts” is projected to debut with slightly lower earnings compared to February’s Marvel release, “Captain America: Brave New World.” The latest Captain America film generated $12 million in previews and went on to earn $88 million over the weekend, totaling $100 million through the extended Presidents’ Day holiday weekend. Globally, it made a total of $192.4 million. Ultimately, it ended its run with a global earnings of $414 million, but faced an overall loss. With a production cost of $180 million and marketing expenses estimated at around $100 million, “Thunderbolts” needs to have a longer theatrical run than “Captain America” did to turn a profit.
The movie “Thunderbolts” is expected to start with slightly lower box office revenues than “Captain America: Brave New World,” which was released in February this year. The fourth Captain America film raked in $12 million during previews and made $88 million over the weekend, accumulating a total of $100 million over the extended Presidents’ Day holiday weekend. Globally, it grossed $192.4 million. However, its global earnings amounted to $414 million, resulting in an overall loss. Given that “Thunderbolts” cost $180 million to produce and approximately $100 million for marketing, it needs to stay in theaters longer than “Captain America” did to make a profit.
In the time since the pandemic, only three Marvel films, excluding “Captain America: Brave New World,” have debuted with earnings under $100 million. These include “Eternals” (which made $71 million in 2021), “Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” ($75 million), and most recently, “The Marvels” ($46 million) in 2023.
Beyond Pugh, the cast of “Thunderbolts” includes Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Hannah John-Kamen, Lewis Pullman and others. In their first joint appearance for Marvel, this motley crew of Thunderbolts need to cooperate effectively to take down a fresh, lethal adversary.
Over the upcoming weekend, it’s predicted that “Sinners,” directed by Ryan Coogler, will earn approximately $35 million – a decrease of only 20% compared to last week’s earnings.
