Red Guardian: Tragic Hero or Comic Relief in MCU?

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s movie Thunderbolts, the character Red Guardian made a comeback, yet not in the way his significance warranted. A character who fits this pattern is Alexei Shostakov, more commonly recognized as Red Guardian. Debuting in Black Widow as a faded super soldier with a knack for over-the-top antics and a deep father-daughter connection with Yelena Belova, Red Guardian left an immediate impression. However, despite a powerful introduction and reappearance in Thunderbolts, his role is mainly limited to providing comic relief.

In a cosmos teeming with deities, extraterrestrials, and tech geniuses, it’s simple for intricate, earthbound characters to be overlooked amidst the bustle. This is particularly applicable to characters who debut outside the main Avengers group. The MCU frequently assigns more profound emotional journeys to its principal heroes, while secondary characters – especially those with the potential for dramatic nuance – are employed primarily to add humor. Red Guardian, serving as Russia’s equivalent of Captain America, possesses all the elements for a multilayered and engaging narrative. However, after two films, we’ve barely begun to explore his depth.

David Harbour Plays Alexei In The MCU

David Harbour’s portrayal of Alexei in Black Widow was both amusing and poignant. In only a few scenes, Harbour effectively conveyed Alexei as a man out of his prime, yearning for relevance again amidst remnants of former glory. He is not merely a source of humor; rather, he carries the burden of a complex past, including Cold War intrigue, manipulation of nationalism, and personal disappointments associated with his role as the USSR’s Red Guardian.

In essence, Alexei represented the Soviet Union’s endeavor to produce their version of Captain America. Though the specifics are unclear, the symbolism is potent. Unlike Steve Rogers who became a revered hero and legend, Alexei was cast aside and incarcerated by the same regime he devoted himself to. His fascination with Captain America isn’t merely a jest – it’s a heart-wrenching parallel. He yearns to see himself as an equal, yet secretly acknowledges that he never truly measured up.

In Black Widow, what truly set him apart was not just his comedic moments, but the deep emotional connection he shared with Yelena. Despite not being her biological father, their bond felt authentic. Hidden beneath his bravado, Alexei displayed genuine regret for his past mistakes and a heartfelt yearning to reconnect with her. This added depth to an otherwise action-packed narrative.

Thunderbolts* Misses An Opportunity To Dig Deeper Into Red Guardian’s Past

Red Guardian’s Trauma Went Unexplored

*Thunderbolts* returned Red Guardian to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), yet it failed to delve deeper into his character development, which is disappointing given the chance to explore his personal struggles. A significant oversight occurred as Alexei was left out when other characters’ pasts were shown through Bob’s mind-reading abilities. This omission seems like a squandered opportunity for more depth and insight into Red Guardian’s character.

Among the members of the Thunderbolts squad, Alexei’s backstory stands out as both captivating and troubling. From Soviet experiments to prolonged neglect, his life has been marked by a great deal of pain that merits examination. The most he was given was the chance to revisit VHS tapes showcasing his past triumphs with the USSR.

Instead, he’s primarily employed as a source of comic relief, often relying on familiar tropes such as exaggerated anecdotes, boisterous bravado, and blind self-promotion. Despite this, his most significant emotional bond – his affection for Yelena – remains, though it’s become somewhat strained. Nevertheless, it seems like the Marvel Cinematic Universe is content to limit his complexity to just that single layer of depth.

Time Is Running Out For A Compelling Red Guardian Story

As we move forward, Red Guardian is set to make a comeback in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday, an event that’s already teeming with prominent characters. It’s thrilling to see Alexei in another significant movie, but it’s doubtful he’ll have more than comedic roles this time around. Given the impressive lineup of characters, it seems improbable that he’ll receive substantial character development, considering the return of Robert Downey Jr.’s character to the franchise.

If Marvel doesn’t delve deeper into Red Guardian’s emotional depth in future projects, he may continue to be seen as one-dimensional, which is a shame given his considerable untapped potential. Beneath the humor in Thunderbolts and the swagger lies a character brimming with regret, yearning, and unrealized potential – a tragic antihero who deserves more than just a laugh track.
