Is this the first hint at the next remaster? Bethesda celebrates Morrowind’s 23rd birthday and I think that might actually mean something

Though many gamers are immersed in the charm of Oblivion Remastered, others are anticipating with excitement a potential refresh of Fallout 3. However, there’s a dedicated group of us long-time enthusiasts (count me in) who eagerly await news about an older Elder Scrolls game. It seems Bethesda may have hinted at the slightest chance that they might consider remastering their third installment, Morrowind. Who else is hoping this becomes a reality?

Happy 23rd, Morrowind

On May 1st, 2002, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind was released, making yesterday its 23rd anniversary. To commemorate this special day, Bethesda posted a celebratory message on their platform saying, “Today is the 23rd anniversary of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind! Cheers to you, Nerevar.” It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time they’ve acknowledged Morrowind; they also shared some favorite Morrowind mods for Skyrim on the 20th anniversary. However, with this recent post, I can’t help but wonder if a remaster of Morrowind might be in development. Could it be possible? Perhaps!

Experiencing Oblivion Remastered is like realizing a long-cherished wish, given how flawlessly it’s been improved upon from its 2006 predecessor. Despite the visual upgrade that makes it jaw-droppingly beautiful, it manages to preserve that familiar Oblivion charm. The amusing bugs that were integral to the original game are still present, which is fitting given Bethesda chose not to tamper with what made Oblivion special. It’s still possible to complete the entire game in under 15 minutes – a testament to its enduring iconic status.

Just a simple girl, standing in Seyda Neen, asking for a remaster

Despite the availability of the Morrowind Rebirth mod, I strongly feel that if they were to release a remastered version, we fans certainly deserve one as well! The challenge lies in Morrowind’s age; it was only four years older than Oblivion at the time, but technology in games was advancing rapidly during those days. A proper remaster for Morrowind would require extensive reworking due to its advanced age. It’s already a bit tricky to suggest Oblivion Remastered to someone who hasn’t played the original game, and suggesting Morrowind without any updates would be even more challenging.

In essence, let me clarify, I’m not overstating when I say the game required extensive modifications. It lacked several essential features, such as voice acting, quest markers on the map, a proper minimap, or even a compass to guide you. Instead, it dropped you into the world without any assistance, essentially saying, “Best of luck.” This approach might be too challenging for some players. Moreover, there was randomized combat – meaning, you could strike someone standing right in front of you and still miss your target. Yes, it sounds harsh, but that’s part of its unique appeal. For me, at least, it holds a certain charm. I assure you, I’m not joking about this.

It’s possible I might be getting a little carried away with Bethesda celebrating Morrowind’s 23rd anniversary, but honestly, I’m just a straightforward person. What I yearn for is to ascend the lighthouse in Seyda Neen and spy on Fargoth, or patiently wait for Tarhiel to descend from above. But most of all, I long to behold the city of Balmora once more, in its breathtaking splendor, completely remastered. And I’m confident that I’m not alone in this desire.
