In simple terms, it’s been confirmed that Overwatch 2 will introduce a fresh game mode titled “Payload Race.” This mode intensifies the usual gameplay by including two payloads instead of one, thereby increasing the excitement and challenges!

At the moment, Overwatch is undergoing a revitalization, with an abundance of fresh content and various modes to enjoy the game, and it seems this trend will continue unabated.

Following the debut of Stadium, we’re excited to announce another essential game mode arriving soon: Payload Race. Unlike traditional modes where only one objective is contested, this mode introduces two objectives for a more dynamic experience.

When is Payload Race coming to Overwatch 2?

The Payload Race will kick off Season 17, which means we can expect its debut on June 24, 2025. For those eagerly anticipating a fresh game mode for Stadium, the wait is nearly over!

The package will include two refreshed maps, including revamped versions of Route 66 and King’s Row (also known as London). These maps have been redesigned to accommodate both Payloads within a single region. As of now, it is unclear when additional maps will be added for this mode.

What is Payload Race?

In the upcoming Season 17, there’s an exciting new game mode called Payload Race that will be exclusive to Stadiums. Instead of the usual single cart, there will now be two carts to compete for.

In Payload Race, what sets it apart from the standard version is that players must not only advance their own payload but also hinder the enemy’s progress. This necessitates teams to divide their forces a bit more than they typically would, much like 2CP in the early days of Overwatch 1.

According to Senior Game Designer Dylan Snyder, the mode will play something like this:

In the competition called Payload Race, teams navigate their payloads through winding pathways and ever-changing surroundings, often engaging in fierce battles with rival teams. The final showdown occurs at the finish line where the leading team tries to secure victory, while the second place team scrambles to thwart their efforts!

It’s likely that the various routes on the map won’t be shown yet, but we can anticipate that some areas will have multiple paths meeting up, potentially leading to intense team confrontations in close proximity. On the other hand, certain sections of the map may split into different directions, necessitating teams to play more independently.

At this point, we haven’t learned much about the specifics of the new feature, but given that it’s scheduled for Season 17, we’ll be finding out more details in the near future.
