Shudder, a popular streaming platform, is recognized for showcasing some exceptional and distinctive horror films in the genre. And their recent acquisition, “Good Boy”, follows suit. Debuted earlier this year at SXSW, this film stands out with its intriguing concept – it’s a supernatural story narrated from a dog’s point of view.
By the specified deadline, Shudder has acquired distribution rights for the movie titled “Good Boy“. The film will be screened in countries like the United States, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. Ben Leonberg is directing this project, which he co-wrote with Alex Cannon. Notably, Leonberg’s real-life canine friend, Indy, plays a significant role in this movie. The unique aspect of “Good Boy” lies in its reimagining of the haunted house genre by narrating the story from the perspective of a four-legged protagonist.
Instead of living amidst city bustle, Indy and Todd opt for a secluded, long-abandoned rural home that belongs to their family. Right from the get-go, it’s obvious that the old house gives Indy the chills, but his feelings towards Todd remain steadfast and unchanging.
In his fresh surroundings, Indy experiences an unsettling atmosphere right away. He perceives unseen entities, pursues spectral footprints, gets ominous messages from a spectral hound, and is tormented by fleeting visions of the past inhabitant’s grisly end. As a malevolent force starts to control Todd, Indy has to battle against an evil force aiming to drag him into the afterlife.
If it fails to capture your curiosity, we’re not sure what else could. As Emily Gotto, SVP of Acquisitions and Production for Shudder explains, “Ben Leonberg’s debut offers a unique horror experience, centered around perspective. The entire film is told through the eyes of Indy, a devoted dog, whose fear and determination to save his human make us feel the same. This results in a chilling and moving experience that showcases an impressive performance from Indy and a confident first feature from Leonberg.
What Critics Are Saying About ‘Good Boy’
Following its premiere at SXSW in March and screenings at various other film festivals, the new horror movie, titled “Good Boy,” has garnered attention from critics. With a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, it seems the film is off to a promising start. Amanda Sink of The Hollywood Outsider finds it “fresh” and “disorienting,” while Jonathan DeHaan from Nightmare on Film Street highly appreciates Leonberg’s directorial debut, commending it as an engaging experience in his review.
Unique charm in indie filmmaking! A refreshing perspective on a worn-out genre, and one that excels remarkably due to its lovable protagonist and exceptional direction and editing, which effectively immerses us in the tale from a dog’s point of view.
According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Frank Scheck, what stands out and makes the film emotionally intense is Indiana’s unwavering loyalty towards his cherished owner, demonstrated by his readiness to perform nearly any action in order to safeguard him. Other reviews echo this sentiment, with Mary Beth McAndrews from Dread Central stating that Good Boy is “poised to be one of the scariest films of 2025.
The premiere date for the movie “Good Boy” on Shudder hasn’t been announced yet, but it’s worth mentioning that alongside its exceptional dog actor, the film boasts horror veterans Larry Fessenden and Stuart Rudin in leading roles. As more details emerge, such as a release date and trailer, we will share them with you.
