Oblivion Remastered Didn’t Steamroll Expedition 33, Publisher Says

The game “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33” was launched not long after Microsoft unexpectedly released an updated version of the game “Oblivion”. Some people questioned if this close release might negatively impact “Expedition 33”, but it sold over a million copies immediately, suggesting success, despite being launched so near to “Oblivion Remastered” which also gained quick popularity.

According to Matthew Handrahan from Kepler Interactive, they were well aware that Expedition 33 had a unique and distinct character which would make it stand out among other games.

Handrahan shared that he encountered numerous individuals who enjoyed playing The Elder Scrolls series but not necessarily Final Fantasy, and the reverse was also true – many didn’t play The Elder Scrolls but preferred Final Fantasy, based on his experience in the games media industry prior to joining Kepler.

Apart from being taken aback by Oblivion Remastered’s sudden release, Expedition 33 had already built up its own momentum, according to him. He expressed that they were quite assured about matching up with it. Additionally, factors such as our competitive pricing and the game’s inclusion in Game Pass meant we anticipated a significant amount of attention for the game.

Essentially, Handrahan stated that being near Oblivion didn’t have any negative impact on us. Instead, it seems to have highlighted the quality of role-playing games during that particular week, causing everyone to discuss and reflect upon the genre.

According to Ampere Analysis, approximately one-third of all Expedition 33 players also engaged with Oblivion Remastered. Interestingly, a higher percentage – about 55% – of Expedition 33 players on Xbox consoles played Oblivion Remastered. The overlap was more modest for Steam and PS5 users, at 22% and 16%, respectively.

As a devoted gaming enthusiast, I can share that according to Ampere’s findings, Xbox emerged as the leading platform for Expedition 33, accounting for an impressive 45% of all gamers. Interestingly, a significant 47% of Oblivion Remastered players opted for Xbox as well. The PS5 took the second spot in this expedition with 30% of participants, and Steam came in third, claiming 25% of the gaming population.

In the case of Oblivion Remastered, Ampere’s data indicated that Steam held the second spot with a 34% share, while PlayStation trailed behind at 19%. The inclination towards Xbox for these two games was partially due to them being part of Game Pass, according to the report.

Although Xbox led in sales for both Expedition 33 and Oblivion Remastered, it wasn’t the platform with the most gameplay time for either title. According to Ampere, the average playtime for Expedition 33 was 2.2 hours on Xbox, while it was 4.4 hours on PlayStation and Steam. Similarly, PlayStation users played an average of 3.8 hours for Oblivion Remastered, compared to 3.6 hours on Steam, with Xbox players averaging just 2.2 hours.

All the statistics presented in this report, sourced from Ampere, encompass data from the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and Europe, spanning each game’s release date up until Sunday, April 27th. It’s important to note that Oblivion Remastered was launched just two days before Expedition 33, which could undoubtedly influence Ampere’s findings.
