In an anticipated shift, the prices of Xbox consoles experienced a substantial hike in the year 2025. Contrary to speculation, this price rise is not due to a technical error or limited-time offer.
Microsoft dropped the news on May 1: prices are going up on consoles, controllers, and soon, games. This increase is permanent and impossible to miss.
The expenses of creating video games have been climbing, and the ongoing effect of inflation hasn’t helped matters. Just as numerous other companies, Microsoft seeks to preserve its profitability. In contrast to the previous year, the price hikes for Xbox hardware in 2023 are broader and more substantial.
Xbox is raising prices across the board
As announced by Microsoft, the Xbox Series X now costs $599.99, up $100 from before. The new 2TB Galaxy Black edition goes for a $729.99 price tag. That humble Series S (512GB) is now $379.99. The 1TB version climbs to $429.99. Even the digital-only Series X isn’t safe, jumping to $549.99.
Starting this upcoming holiday season, certain exclusive games from Xbox will retail for $79.99 each. This price change might influence titles such as Fable, Gears of War: E-Day, State of Decay 3, and other similar games.
Additionally, there was an upgrade for controllers as well. The usual price for a wireless controller is now set at $64.99. Prices for headsets also increased, though this adjustment was only made in the United States and Canada.
According to Microsoft’s announcement, they have made some strategic changes due to fluctuations in the market and the escalating expense associated with development.
Product | Old Price | New Price | Difference |
---|---|---|---|
Xbox Series X (1TB) | $499.99 | $599.99 | +$100 |
Xbox Series S (512GB) | $299.99 | $379.99 | +$80 |
Xbox Series S (1TB) | $349.99 | $429.99 | +$80 |
Xbox Series X 2TB (Galaxy) | $599.99 | $729.99 | +$130 |
Xbox Wireless Controller | $59.99 | $64.99 | +$5 |
First-party Xbox Games (2025) | $69.99 | $79.99 | +$10 |
Regardless of recent price increases, the cost of Xbox Game Pass will stay the same as Microsoft has affirmed that subscription fees will not be adjusted.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve noticed that the recent $79.99 price tag for games isn’t exclusive to Xbox. Nintendo and Sony are also stepping into this territory, while hinting at a potential change. Much like the evolution of streaming services, it seems the industry is gradually adjusting to a new norm, subtly increasing prices one step at a time.
