“According to Miguel Angel Govea, Alief’s partner, this is the most unified, storytelling film Omar has created thus far. He further mentioned that Omar skillfully enchants us with his visually and audibly impressive movie through powerful imagery.

In the blend of sci-fi and dystopian storytelling, the film “Luna Rosa” unfolds in Borinquen, historically known as Puerto Rico to the Indigenous Taínos. The protagonist, Zur’na (portrayed by Flora Sylvestre), embarks on a perilous quest across lands governed by American colonial powers, seeking her lost brother. In this adventure, Rodríguez-López exposes the lingering impacts of imperialism, drawing inspiration from renowned Latin American cinema and quirky B-movies. This fusion births a thrilling universe teeming with elaborate rituals, brainwashing, and ominous holographic entities.

Alief has privately revealed a sneak peek to EbMaster. Currently, they are receiving proposals from countries like Spain, Colombia, Argentina, and the UK, while Piano Mexico is handling distribution within Mexico.

The movie will make its debut in the United Kingdom at SXSW London on June 6, as part of their official lineup. Anna Bogutskaya, the head of the festival’s screen, stated that the film represents the type of blend of creative ideas and artistic forms that they aim to highlight during the first-ever SXSW London event.

Stepping into the cinematic realm as a humble reviewer, I’ve just returned from an immersive journey through a black-and-white canvas set against the vibrant backdrop of Mexico. The film, a visual symphony, is graced by a hauntingly beautiful score, masterfully crafted by Rodríguez-López and none other than John Frusciante, the gifted guitarist from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who’s also lent his magical touch to several albums by The Mars Volta. This sonic journey is as captivating as the visual one, making this film an unforgettable experience.

Ester Bernal, who heads distribution at Piano Mexico, praises “Luna Rosa” as one of the most visionary takes on science fiction within Latin America.

Omar Rodríguez López’s vision brings an exceptional blend of fantasy and sharp social commentary to the film,” she noted. She further mentioned that the distribution strategy will encompass screenings at art house cinemas, as well as unique showings in non-traditional venues.

The creation of the multicultural film project was funded by Clouds Hill Films, a subsidiary of the German-based Clouds Hill Group, also home to a record label managing The Mars Volta band.

Alongside Rodríguez-López’s Telesterion Inc., Mexico’s Kintsugi Cine, Peliculas Extrañas, and MalaCOSA Cine are additionally involved in production.

Rodriguez-Lopez, who’s been featured in the documentary “Omar and Cedric: If This Ever Gets Weird” directed by Nicolas Jack Davies, is at present filming his fifth movie, this one set in Texas with a Western theme.

Alief’s lineup for Cannes features several intriguing titles, such as the Polish dystopian drama “Glorious Summer” (screened at SXSW 2025), the Indian folk horror film “Bokshi” (IFFR 2025), the Canadian-Korean Fipresci award winner “Mongrels” (Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival 2024), the Colombian-French-German supernatural drama “Horizonte” (TIFF 2024), as well as the German-British thriller “Lonely Musketeer” and the BBC Films dramatic thriller “Edge of Summer.
