Today, Gearbox unveiled a twenty-minute presentation titled “State of Play” about Borderlands 4, which was unexpectedly moved up from its original release date. Yesterday, we also found out that Borderlands 4 will be hitting stores almost two weeks earlier than anticipated. To clarify, this early release is not related to Grand Theft Auto 6 or any other game. Today’s “Borderlands 4” State of Play showcased new characters, gameplay mechanics, features, and as expected, an array of guns. Despite being the latest installment in the franchise, it appears to be just another game in the series, albeit the most visually impressive one yet.
Borderlands 4 State of Play confirms Borderlands 4 will be more Borderlands
At the Borderlands 4 showcase, there was a strong focus on enhancing movement options. Characters demonstrated various abilities like hovering, gliding, and even ground-pound attacks. New to Borderlands 4 is the addition of grapple hooks, allowing players to reach higher grounds or pick up and throw explosive barrels at enemies. Moreover, each player will have their own vehicle that can be summoned anywhere, not just from designated spots. You can catch the entire showcase on PlayStation’s YouTube channel.
During this State of Play event, one striking difference was the absence of the customary antics typically associated with Borderlands. There was only one amusing instance, when the narrator announced the return of Claptrap, to which the character responded with a “Bummer.” Apart from that, it might have been challenging to distinguish this gameplay demonstration from something else. Of course, when a gun sprays acid or one of the well-known masked psychopaths appears, it’s hard to confuse. However, when the player is climbing a cliff or riding a sci-fi hoverbike, it could seem quite similar to many popular shooter games currently available.
In this presentation, we got a glimpse of the four fresh characters you can play as, and they appear quite entertaining. The spotlight was mainly on Vex the Siren and Rafa the Former Soldier during this showcase. Vex has the unique ability to harness “phase energy” for attacking enemies, boosting herself, and conjuring various companions like a grim reaper and a saber-toothed tiger. In contrast, Rafa seems to be more direct, utilizing an experimental exosuit that can materialize an array of weapons through a process called digistructing. Although I’m not entirely sure what that implies, it certainly sounds intriguing. For further information, check out PlayStation.Blog.
In a fresh and straightforward manner:
Borderlands 4 appears impressive. The traditional comic-book style graphics have returned, giving the game an appealing aesthetic. The ability to customize weapons by combining parts seems like an exciting way to continue the series’ trademark over-the-top gun types. I’m eagerly looking forward to playing this game with friends when it releases in September, but the State of Play didn’t show anything that makes me believe it will offer significantly more than what I’ve previously experienced from this well-known franchise. It doesn’t seem like it will bring any groundbreaking changes, but it should still be enjoyable.
