Andor’s Shocking Twist: Rebels Just Like The Empire?!

In the fourth to sixth episodes of Season 2, Andor progressively edges towards his destiny as depicted in Rogue One. As the Empire strategically exploits Ghorman’s resources, Luthen Rael’s resistance may inadvertently aid their scheme through their actions. Concurrently, two Rebel leaders, Mon Mothma and Saw Gerrera, with contrasting approaches, struggle to escalate their conflicts, yielding varying degrees of success.

In these recent episodes, it’s become strikingly evident that the Ghorman people are being manipulated by both the Empire and the rebels, acting as pieces on a grand chessboard. As a devoted fan, I find this intriguing because it highlights the intricate web of power and deceit that characterizes this series. Despite Dedra Meero’s relentless pursuit for “Axis” (her undercover name for Luthen), the rebels still seem to pose little threat to the Empire’s authority, as per the usual twists and turns in this captivating narrative. Viewers are given a privileged glimpse into various viewpoints regarding these unfolding events, making it all the more engaging.

Andor Highlights That Ghorman Will Suffer, No Matter Who Wins

The Empire and the Rebels Have Different Reasons, but Tragedy Is Guaranteed

In a nutshell, it was already known from the Star Wars canon that Mon Mothma’s flight from Coruscant and the Senate was triggered by certain events. To validate this massacre, the Empire was ready to play a strategic game, with Dedra dispatching Syril Karn to infiltrate the Ghorman resistance. Simultaneously, Cassian Andor, Vel Sartha, and Cinta Kaz were aiding the resistance, transforming their movement from debates and town hall meetings into something more aggressive. However, what adds a layer of sadness to this scenario is that Luthen only directed them to Ghorman due to learning about the Empire’s intention towards the planet.

Luthen, who had previously addressed the informant with a passionate speech on sacrifice, learned of a hidden strategy. He’s puzzled as to why the Empire is targeting the Ghorman people, but he’s determined to uncover the reason. Cassian’s disagreement with Luthen over the Ghorman people’s lack of strong resistance suggests concern for their wellbeing. However, Luthen seems more concerned about how this situation affects their cause.

Luthen’s rebels haven’t always agreed with Cassian on handling the Ghorman resistance, and this isn’t their first disagreement. In this mission, Sel Vartha and Cinta Kaz, a once-romantic duo, reunite. As the rebellion progresses, Cinta and Sel reconcile, but tragically, Cinta is one of the rebels who dies on Ghorman, proving Cassian’s point. Sel not only loses the love of her life, but she may also come to terms with the fact that Cinta gave her life for a mission destined to fail. The people of Ghorman are not likely to succeed in their rebellion. However, it is hoped that their eventual downfall will ignite the fire of rebellion across the galaxy.

Dedra Meero Proves She Loves the Empire Far More Than Syril Karn

Syril May See a New Side of the Empire, but He Remains In the Dark

In the start of Andor’s second season, Dedra temporarily halts her relationship with Syril due to loyalty concerns. Despite his affection for her, he is equally dedicated to uncovering rebels and suppressing an uprising. Following almost a year in the Ghorman capital, he gains the confidence of town leaders at a meeting hall. He puts on a charade when the ISB finds the resistance’s listening device in his office. Syril manages to persuade the Ghorman authorities that he feels disillusioned with and distrustful of the ISB. They attempt to win him over by suggesting they are faithful Imperial citizens, and the ISB operates without the Emperor’s authorization.

In Season 2, Episode 5 of Andor, when Syril pays a visit to Coruscant, he only gets an hour with Dedra in their old dwelling. However, he’s noticeably more thrilled about the time he shares with her and Major Lio Partagatz at the ISB’s central hub. He seems to be right in the thick of things, even witnessing the initial move by the Ghorman rebels and describing it for both of them. Yet, Syril finds himself just as much a piece on the board as the people of Ghorma. The multiple layers of deception surrounding the Empire’s activities make Andor such a Star Wars standout.

In the realm of cinematic intrigue, here I am, a cinephile caught in a tangled web of deceit. I’ve been misleading my team and the Ghorman resistance, much like how Syril deceived them. Dedra and Partagatz have spun me a yarn about my true purpose, just as Krennic has done to us, masking the Empire’s real intent for Ghorman’s resources under the guise of an “energy” project – all while concealing the Death Star. Sel, too, is weaving her own lies to the resistance, perhaps because of the woman she lost at the hands of these very people, she no longer seems concerned that they are being manipulated by both parties.

Andor Has the Rebels Wage Two Different Battles on Coruscant

Both Mon Mothma and Luthen Rael Lose Some of Their Political Capital

In the fourth to sixth episodes of Season 2 from the series Andor, we see Mon Mothma’s part of the Empire’s strategy unfold, as she struggles to gather support for the people. Simultaneously, Luthen becomes privy to the intentional defamation campaign against Ghorman, through his secretive chats. By the end of these episodes, both significant figures in Imperial society find themselves in more precarious positions. Mon Mothma finds herself without allies to back her up in the Senate. Luthen narrowly avoids exposure due to a listening device hidden by his partner Kleya within an artifact, and also loses a trusted operative.

During this time, the specifics about the massacre or her escape from Coruscant remain unanswered. She attempted to aid the Ghorman people via legislative routes, yet other Senators were hesitant due to their fear of defying the Emperor. Here, she stands in silent shock as the Senate swears an oath of “unwavering loyalty” to the Empire. Later, at a gathering of prestigious guests hosted by Davo Sculdan (Leida Mothma’s father-in-law), Director Krennic emphasized how authoritarian regimes often rewrite history, portraying their opposition as “criminals” who “constantly lie.

Interestingly, Krennic, who often accuses others of dishonesty, is speaking to Luthen, a man known for his criminal activities and propensity for deception. Although the revelation of the listening device isn’t catastrophic, other setbacks are concerning. The loss of Cinta, a loyal and trusted ally of Luthen, weakens his organization significantly. Moreover, her death creates a rift between him and Cassian, as Luthen’s support for the Ghorman resistance further distances them. Additionally, if Luthen speaks with Bix while Cassian is absent, this encounter could solidify their separation permanently. Lastly, it seems that another one of Luthen’s operatives may fall into Saw Gerrera’s hands, which isn’t beneficial for either Cassian or Luthen as Rebel leaders. These series of events are far from favorable for both parties.

How Saw Gerrera and Bix Caleen Showcase Other Sides of Andor’s Rebellion

From Traitors to Trauma, the Rebels Do Not Yet Have a Full Alliance

In conclusion, the series “Andor” delves into the hardships faced by the Rebellion. Wilmon journeys to D’Qar, the resistance base seen in “The Force Awakens,” where Leia Organa’s anti-First Order forces have their stronghold. His mission is to instruct one of Saw’s rebels on how to use a potentially lethal device to pilfer fuel. Initially, it seems that Saw intends to eliminate Wilmon for knowing too much about his operations. However, the man Wilmon trains is assassinated as a spy instead. Under duress, Wilmon is compelled to aid in the fuel heist, where Saw delivers an inspiring speech about the grueling reality of fighting a war that requires survival amidst forces capable of their destruction.

Simultaneously on Coruscant, Bix Caleen is grappling with the aftermath of her Season 1 ordeals, particularly the torture she endured. Her sleep is disturbed by recurring nightmares that Dr. Gorst is lurking in their safehouse. To cope, she resorts to medication for slumber. Cassian prioritizes her safety above all else, which makes him resent Luthen for speaking with her without his knowledge. Despite this tension, the necessity of eliminating Dr. Gorst and his program, as part of the Empire’s expansion plans, allows Cassian and Bix to successfully eliminate him and dismantle the operation. This mission, orchestrated by Luthen, brings a rare sense of personal fulfillment, but these Andor episodes underscore that the Rebels and the Empire are not as disparate as one might hope.

Andor streams Tuesdays at 9:00 p.m. ET on .
