Guy Ritchie to Direct ‘Road House 2’ With Jake Gyllenhaal

As a devoted movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Guy Ritchie is stepping up to the director’s chair for the upcoming sequel of the iconic action film “Road House”. The charismatic Jake Gyllenhaal will once again embody the role of our ex-UFC fighter hero, Dalton. I can hardly wait!

As a movie enthusiast, I’m excited to share that “Road House 2” will be our third joint project with Ritchie and Gyllenhaal, following “Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant,” which we produced together at Amazon MGM Studios. Previously, we worked together on the upcoming action-thriller “In the Grey.

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve learned screenwriter Will Beall, known for “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” and “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” is penning the script for the upcoming sequel! Although specifics about the plot are being tightly guarded, I can hardly contain my excitement. The producers for this project include Charles Roven and Alex Gartner from Atlas Entertainment, along with Jake Gyllenhaal through his Nine Stories Productions, and Josh McLaughlin. Ivan Atkinson will serve as an executive producer. As a fan, I’m eagerly waiting to uncover more details about this anticipated sequel!

In a modern adaptation of the 1989 movie “Road House,” starring Patrick Swayze, Jake Gyllenhaal plays the role of a former UFC fighter facing financial difficulties. After discovering him asleep in his car, the owner of a roadhouse in Florida Keys hires Dalton as the bar’s bouncer. However, he soon finds himself embroiled in a conflict between outlaws, bikers (including real-life mixed martial artist and newcomer actor, Conor McGregor), a developer aiming to construct an extravagant resort for the wealthy elite, and himself.

The movie, which premiered on Amazon MGM’s streaming platform Prime Video last March, was highly successful and garnered widespread acclaim. In fact, the studio announced last summer during their initial Upfronts presentation that a sequel was in development. This film not only broke viewing records for the streamer but also became the most-watched debut production for the studio worldwide, according to Jennifer Salke, who was then the head of the studio at that time.

As a cinephile, I can’t help but marvel at Ritchie’s impressive film portfolio. Take, for instance, the 2019 blockbuster “Aladdin,” a Disney live-action remake that raked in over $1 billion globally, marking a significant milestone in my box office journey. Another noteworthy addition is “The Gentlemen,” a British gangster comedy that sparked a successful Netflix spinoff series, with the second season set to premiere this spring. Recently, I’ve delved into the world of Paramount + with the drama series “MobLand,” featuring an all-star cast including Tom Hardy, Helen Mirren, and Pierce Brosnan. My latest project, “Fountain of Youth,” starring John Krasinski, Natalie Portman, and Eiza González, will be gracing Apple TV+ screens on May 23. In the pipeline, you’ll find me working on the black comedy “Wife & Dog” alongside Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike, and Anthony Hopkins.

Ritchie takes over directorial duties from Doug Liman, who voiced dissatisfaction regarding the streaming debut of the initial “Road House” film. Last year, Liman explained to IndieWire that his disappointment arose because he wasn’t adequately compensated. Originally, “Road House” was intended as a theatrical release for MGM, but the distribution plan changed when MGM got bought by Amazon.

Ritchie, Gyllenhaal, and Beall are each managed by different agencies: WME for all three, additionally Gyllenhaal is also represented by Goodman, Genow, Schenkman, Smelkinson & Christopher, and Beall is also handled by Entertainment 360 and McKuin Frankel.
