Will Hero Bans Be Introduced in Overwatch 2 Stadium?

For Overwatch 2’s Season 16, the excitement has been palpable. Alongside the introduction of the new character Freja, an innovative mode dubbed Stadium was unveiled, providing a fresh perspective on gameplay. To top it off, hero bans were introduced in Competitive play for the first time this season – a highly anticipated feature. With fans speculating about Stadium potentially adopting this significant system, here’s what we currently know.

Hero Bans Discussed For Overwatch 2 Stadium

As a gamer, I can’t think of a more exciting moment than diving into Overwatch 2 right now! The Gundam Wing event is still going strong during Season 16, and let’s not forget about Freja joining the fray! Not to mention, Stadium mode has made its grand entrance. If you’re familiar with Stadium, you know it’s a blast to play, but some characters can prove to be quite challenging to take down.

Due to its implementation in competitive mode, numerous gamers are advocating for the inclusion of the hero ban system also in Stadium, as it would undoubtedly enhance the gaming experience by allowing characters such as D.Va and Soldier to be temporarily banned from play.

During a recent Q&A session on Reddit with Blizzard’s team, this issue was raised, and the responses provided a mix of sweet hope and sadness. Daniel Duffin, a Test Analyst, explicitly responded to this request, explaining that implementing hero bans would be challenging at the moment due to Stadium mode having only 17 characters in its limited hero pool.

As a gamer, I’ve picked up that Blizzard hasn’t ruled out the possibility of hero bans just yet. Duffin made it clear that this is something they might consider implementing down the line, but for now, it’s not on the table. He hinted that when the roster of heroes grows larger, they may reconsider introducing a hero ban system into Stadium.

In response to the ongoing conversation, Connor Kou, Senior Systems Designer, has acknowledged the desire for hero bans and sees potential benefits for gameplay. He expressed his team’s eagerness to delve into this topic further, suggesting that hero bans could potentially be implemented in Stadium at some point. Therefore, players can remain optimistic about the possibility of seeing hero bans integrated into the game in the future.

At present, even without a ban system (a feature many players, including myself, believe is essential), Stadium continues to be an enjoyable experience to play and has been incredibly successful since its launch, drawing in large numbers of players for Overwatch 2 and Blizzard. As new heroes are introduced (I’m particularly looking forward to Illari and Ramattra), it’s certain that Stadium will undergo changes, becoming more feature-rich and better balanced. It’s likely that hero bans will be among the adjustments made sooner rather than later.
