DC’s ‘Sgt. Rock’ Movie, From Luca Guadagnino, No Longer in Development

DC Studios‘ “Sgt. Rock” is going on leave — but it may not be permanent.

The project directed by Luca Guadagnino, who collaborated with Colin Farrell during World War II, is no longer being developed at the studio as confirmed by EbMaster. The decision isn’t due to creative differences: According to a reliable source, the requirement for outdoor filming in the UK necessitated a summer start date, which the production was unable to meet. Filming during winter was not feasible either. Consequently, the studio has postponed the project, hoping for a resumption in 2026; however, Guadagnino’s future involvement remains uncertain.

DC Studios’ co-heads, James Gunn and Peter Safran, found appeal in the “Sgt. Rock” movie project due to Justin Kuritzkes’ screenplay. They envisioned it more as a historical adventure than a typical comic book superhero film set during World War II, with the character originally introduced in 1959 as a U.S. Army non-commissioned officer leading Easy Company against Nazi enemies.

Initially, Daniel Craig contemplated playing the main character, but didn’t officially agree; after he declined, Guadagnino and DC looked towards Farrell, who had recently garnered positive reviews for his lead role in DC Studio’s HBO series “The Penguin.” Farrell is anticipated to reprise this role in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman Sequel,” which has been postponed from its initial release date of October 2, 2026, and is now scheduled for October 1, 2027.

More to come.
