The Marvel Universe consistently delivers fresh material, available in cinemas as well as through a Disney+ subscription. Audiences who have followed the Marvel films sequentially will likely remember the unprecedented success of Deadpool and Wolverine, but this venture has become entangled in the legal dispute between Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively. The studio’s unwillingness to disclose documents concerning the movie is quite unexpected.
Blake Lively’s legal dispute with Wayfarer Studios, initiated by her co-star Justin Baldoni (director of ‘It Ends With Us’), has evolved into a complex series of court cases. Baldoni filed a libel claim that implicated both Lively and Ryan Reynolds, as well as the character Nicepool in the upcoming ‘Deadpool 3’. The Wrap obtained court documents revealing Marvel’s stance on Baldoni’s demand for access to records detailing the creation and cinematic journey of Nicepool. A representative from law firm Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp explained Marvel’s reasons for resisting this request in a statement.
The proposed papers carry a high level of confidentiality since they pertain to the progression of a character within a continuing series of movies known as a franchise, namely the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). A significant portion of MCU’s fame stems from its intricate web of interwoven narratives, subplots, and characters, which is showcased through ‘crossover‘ events, sequels, and more. The speculation surrounding the incorporation and evolution of such elements in future, unannounced films has sparked widespread curiosity among fans, with Marvel carefully protecting this information.
It seems intriguing! Although Nicepool appeared as a standalone character, there might be plans for this version to reappear in future Marvel films. This could explain why the studio is being secretive about their materials concerning the character’s creation.
You can find the Deadpool series streaming on Disney+! The new ad-supported subscription costs $9.99 per month, while you can go ad-free by paying $15.99 monthly or enjoy 16% savings when pre-paying for an entire year at $159.99. Check it out here! [View Deal]
It’s no wonder Marvel is resisting Baldoni’s demand for Nicopool documents, given their stringent security measures. If they were to comply with the actor/director’s subpoena, it could potentially establish a legal precedent that might impact future projects or legal disputes for the studio.
It’s understandable that fans would be both thrilled and puzzled by the possibility of Nicepool reappearing in the MCU. In the climactic fight scene of Deadpool 3, Nicepool met a gruesome end at the hands of his fellow Deadpool Corps., with Deadpool himself using him as a shield. It appeared that this version of Wade Wilson had met his end, but given the complexities of the multiverse, anything might be feasible.
Amidst my ongoing legal tussle with Blake Lively concerning her novel, “It Ends With Us,” attention inexplicably shifted towards Deadpool and Wolverine. According to me, Nicepool, a character I believe was crafted to belittle me, embodies this shift – from the character’s appearance to the dialogue attributed to it. It remains to be seen whether Marvel will need to share the documents detailing its creation in response to these claims.
The entire Deadpool series is now streaming on Disney+, and the next Marvel Cinematic Universe film set to hit theaters is Thunderbolts* on May 2nd, 2025. It remains to be seen when the character of Wade Wilson (in any form) will reappear in the shared universe.
