Be advised: Contains spoilers for Doctor Who season 15, episode 3, titled “The Well.” In this episode, Doctor Who revisits a familiar setting, yet episode 3 subtly contradicts a casual remark made during the planet’s introduction in 2008. As the story unfolds, “The Well” is revealed to be a follow-up to the episode “Midnight,” though much of the episode has transpired before this connection is made. I found this twist particularly exciting because “Midnight” ranks among my favorite Doctor Who episodes, not just from David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor, but overall. Regrettably, showrunner/writer Russell T. Davies overlooked a line he had written in the original script while working on the sequel.
As a passionate movie buff, I must say that the heart of “The Well” revolves around the reappearance of the monster that Ten previously encountered in “Midnight.” This enigmatic being, without a name, has undergone quite a transformation over the 400,000 years since its last encounter with the Doctor. Consequently, Ncuti Gatwa’s portrayal of the Time Lord finds him as powerless as Tennant was during that earlier encounter. It’s no shock, given the villain’s return isn’t the only change over these years. The creature’s homeworld, now known as Planet 6767, bears little resemblance to its previous identity as Midnight, creating a plot conundrum.
Doctor Who Season 4 Claimed No One Could Ever Touch Midnight’s Diamonds, But “The Well” Says Otherwise
The diamonds are gone by the time of Fifteen’s visit to the planet
Though the glistening expanse of Midnight appears adorned with stunning diamond-like structures, an event in 2008 unveiled them as forbidden wealth. Their intense absorption of galvanic radiation from the planet’s X-tonic sun makes handling them dangerous. However, “The Well” offers proof that this hasn’t always been the case. Caoilfhionn Dunne’s character, Shaya Costallion, mentions in a conversation that after the X-tonic sun transformed into a grey star, wars erupted. They depleted all carbon from the planet’s surface, leaving it desolate.
“Look at all those diamonds. Poisoned by the sun. No one can ever touch them.”
– Doctor Who, season 4, episode 10, “Midnight.”
Davies may have been expressing regret over a statement in “Midnight,” or he could have been harboring an alternate interpretation that alters our understanding.
Explaining Doctor Who’s Midnight Diamonds Plot Hole
“The Well” is set long enough after “Midnight” for impressive new technologies to exist
As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but ponder over the intriguing plot hole in “The Well”. Although it doesn’t offer much insight into Shaya’s diamond explanation, it seems plausible that the vast expanse of time between “Midnight” and Doctor Who season 15, episode 3 might be the key. In this interstellar era, advancements in technology could have been made, potentially enabling the removal of the diamonds from the planet’s surface. This new tech might be capable of neutralizing the harmful galvanic radiation that once rendered them toxic, making it safe to handle without falling victim to their poisonous properties.
One alternative interpretation could be that the “Midnight” diamonds were exploited for their radiative properties during the wars mentioned in “The Well”. If this is true, it’s concerning that a diamond mine still exists on Planet 6767, as even those deep underground are heavily irradiated. With insufficient data, we can’t definitively say why the diamonds have disappeared in “The Well”, but the scarcity of details offers numerous speculative explanations.
Doctor Who’s “Wars” Might Have Been Caused By Humanity Not Existing
“The Robot Revolution” revealed that Earth is gone
In “The Well,” it’s suggested that most of my best ideas about Midnight’s lost diamonds are connected to the wars Shaya talks about. As for those wars, I have another idea, this time focused on them. The events depicted in “The Well” imply that Earth was truly destroyed as shown at the end of “The Robot Revolution,” which took place in 2025. Consequently, the human race wasn’t able to join the interstellar community, remaining largely unknown throughout the universe.
In a hypothetical alternate timeframe that we now call the future, humans played significant roles across the cosmos. They expanded and built colonies over numerous centuries, shaping major events. Hence, conflicts might have arisen due to the ripple effect of human extinction, resulting in an entirely different future timeline. If the Doctor had journeyed to a ‘Doctor Who’ universe where humans were absent from history, he would likely have encountered remnants of diamond deposits left behind.
