International sales rights for “The Man Who Saw the Bear,” the eagerly-awaited directorial return of renowned French actor Pierre Richard, have been acquired by Loco Films. This highly-anticipated film will make its global debut at the Cannes Film Festival in the Special Screenings section, as part of a career tribute to Richard, an event likely to be one of the standout moments of this year’s 78th edition.
Richard, currently at the age of 90 but in excellent health, gained notoriety in the ’70s. This was a time when he provided iconic performances in French comedies like “The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe,” “La Chèvre,” and “The Fugitives.”

In “The Man Who Saw the Bear,” I step back into the director’s chair after a 28-year hiatus, having last directed “Distracted” which was a hit at the box office in 1997.
Made by Moby Dick Films (“Three Friends”), “The Man Who Saw the Bear” features Gustave Kervern, an award-winning actor-director known for his film “Effacer l’historique,” and Timi-Joy Marbot, who starred in “Giant with Feet of Clay.
I found myself deeply moved by a captivating tale that centers on an unconventional camaraderie between two individuals: myself and another, who may not have been part of the same generation, but shared an extraordinary bond due to our mutual passion for nature and affection for a rogue circus bear.
In the upcoming fall season, ARP (which is currently present at Cannes alongside Richard Linklater’s “Nouvelle Vague”) plans to distribute Richard’s movie.
In 2006, Richard was honored with an honorary Cesar award. Despite his extensive career and significant influence on both popular culture and French cinema, Richard has not received numerous accolades in France. Comedy, traditionally considered a niche category in French award ceremonies, is gradually evolving. For instance, this year, Artus, the director of “A Little Something Extra,” which became France’s highest-grossing film in 2024, was nominated for the best first film at the Cesar Awards.
