In a recent outburst, an animator on One Piece voiced criticism towards their sound design team, branding their work as unprofessional and advocating for the dismissal of certain team members.
In a fresh take, let me say: In One Piece Episode 1,127 titled “Luffy vs. Kizaru! An Intense Rainbow Battle,” Luffy confronted a primary antagonist from the Egghead storyline at last. Though the battle’s dynamic fight choreography was highly lauded by viewers, some fans found themselves slightly discontent with one element of this much-hyped clash – the audio design.
Not only the audience, but also Sota Shigetsugu, a well-known animator who has worked on projects like Chainsaw Man, Kaiju No. 8, and One Piece, has expressed frustration towards the sound design team at Toei Animation.
One Piece animator slams sound design team
In a post dated April 28th, animator Shigetsugu criticized the outdated sound effects in the anime, stating that “Toei Animation should terminate their One Piece sound team right away.” He further expressed his opinion that this work was below professional standards.
Although the animator removed their Tweet later on, numerous One Piece enthusiasts have shared similar sentiments with Shigetsugu about the show’s audio production.
One user on the One Piece Reddit commented that they concur, it’s puzzling why Toei persists in using antiquated sound effects from several decades ago. It’s especially frustrating because many of these sounds originated from Dragon Ball.

In my opinion, what irks me most about this anime is the repetitive use of sound effects, especially when they’re played back-to-back. This was glaringly obvious during the intense battle between Zoro and Lucci, where the identical sword clash echoed repeatedly, transforming an epic confrontation into something more distracting than thrilling.
A viewer has expressed dissatisfaction, stating that while the animation in fights has significantly improved in recent years, the same limited number of sound variations (at most) are overused, resulting in a less enjoyable viewing experience. Essentially, they’re getting top-notch visuals but poor audio quality, which diminishes the overall value of One Piece in their opinion.
As a dedicated One Piece fan, I can’t help but wonder if the sound design in episode 1,128 will receive an upgrade. However, it might be best to exercise patience and await the WIT Studio remake for a noticeable enhancement in audio quality.
