Third Star Wars Jedi Game Still Moving Forward With Development Amid EA & Respawn Layoffs

Since the debut of Respawn Entertainment’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order in 2019, the franchise has thrived for both Respawn, its publisher Electronic Arts, and Lucasfilm Games. In 2023, they released a sequel titled Jedi: Survivor, and during that time, the developer and Cal Kestis actor Cameron Monaghan announced a third game in the series, which is set to be the final installment.

Supporters of the show had anticipated seeing both the character and the performer transition into a real-life Star Wars project, but so far, that hasn’t happened because work on the third Star Wars Jedi series is still ongoing. However, this past week, unexpected news from Electronic Arts (EA) was revealed, leading to more job cuts at the company and impacting Respawn Entertainment, which has sparked worries about the upcoming Star Wars Jedi game.

Based on information from Bloomberg, it appears that the publishing company has made significant layoffs, affecting approximately 300 to 400 employees spread across various departments. This includes around 100 staff members at Respawn Entertainment. These reductions have impacted teams working on projects like Apex Legends, Star Wars Jedi, and two games that were ultimately canceled. One of the shelved games was a multiplayer FPS title mentioned by IGN, and another was a new Titanfall game, as reported by Bloomberg.

The studio shared an announcement on social media, stating that they are refining their direction for the future and have chosen to abandon two fledgling projects in development. They also plan to make strategic staff changes within Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi. Regarding Star Wars Jedi, the studio expressed enthusiasm about continuing to create new narratives, with the upcoming chapter of the series aiming to set a new standard for storytelling and gameplay. This announcement suggests that the final Star Wars Jedi game will be their main focus as specifics about the project are still under wraps.
