Netflix unveiled one of its highly anticipated Latin American productions, “The Eternaut” (“El Eternauta”), at a lavish themed event preceding its global streaming release to approximately 200 countries. The series has been dubbed into over a dozen languages and features subtitles in more than 30 different languages.
Under the guidance of director Bruno Stagnaro, who previously co-directed the acclaimed film “Pizza, Beer and Cigarettes” (“Pizza, Birra, Faso”), and went on to create the critically acclaimed series “Okupas,” a six-episode series was developed. This series was penned by Stagnaro and screenwriter Ariel Staltari, and produced by Hugo Sigman, Matías Mosteirin, Leticia Cristi and Diego Copello at K&S Films in Buenos Aires (“Wild Tales”).
This series showcases the full potential of an entire industry,” Mosteirin stated to a crowded auditorium, “We’ve acquired a great deal of expertise in its creation and we firmly believe that this project boosts our nation’s ability to generate audio-visual content.
A contemporary science fiction thriller, inspired by an influential Argentine graphic novel with the same title – written by Héctor Germán Oesterheld and illustrated by Francisco Solano López, initially published as a comic strip series from 1957-1959 – delves into the consequences of a lethal snowstorm, focusing on the struggles of its survivors to determine their shared destiny.
As a passionate cinephile, I’d describe it as profoundly gripping and thought-provoking, masterfully tackling broader societal criticism while emphasizing themes of resilience and unity. Ricardo Darín, who stole our hearts in “The Secret In Their Eyes,” portrays Juan Salvo, an ordinary man amidst a stellar ensemble of fellow survivors navigating a suspenseful tale. Our shared mission is to uncover the enigmatic danger lurking within.
Staltari (“The Arrow”), Carla Peterson (“Lalola”), César Troncoso (“Yosi, the Repentant Spy”), Marcelo Subiotto (“Puan”), Andrea Pietra (“Comrades”), Claudio Martínez Bel (“The Agronomist”), Orianna Cárdenas and Mora Fisz complete the cast.
– “round out” means to fill in or complete something, which is what the characters do as part of the ensemble;
– “ensemble” refers to a group of actors who appear together in a production, and “cast” can also be used to describe this group.
Streaming into its Latin American market, Netflix heavily invested in a heart-pounding project, one of the country’s most daring productions yet. This ambitious venture combined both live and virtual sets for the first time on a series of this scale within the region. By tapping into Argentina’s rich audiovisual talent pool, the production created numerous local job opportunities, thereby supporting the filmmaking industry in the process.
(Note: I’ve used more active verbs to make the sentence flow better and used “streaming” instead of “pouring”, as it sounds more natural in this context.)
As a cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at the extraordinary talent that Argentina harbors. When given the chance and the necessary resources, this hidden gem truly blossoms, producing stories unlike any other. We, at Netflix Lat Am, feel privileged to serve as a conduit, a means for these visionary storytellers to share their unique and captivating projects with our audience.
In March 2018, we initiated our first series in Argentina. Today, seven years later, we’ve reached a level of volume, variety, and ambition that’s impressive. What’s most significant is the abundance of talent in Argentina. Even with our strong intentions, dedication, and willingness to invest resources, without local directors, screenwriters, producers, actors, actresses, and technicians bringing these productions to life using our funds, not much progress would have been made. I want to emphasize that we will continue to support Argentina in its artistic endeavors.
The nation has a history of creating intelligent intellectual properties (IP) in various fields, including its own independent film industry and several popular Netflix originals. Some notable examples include the romantic comedy “Envious” directed by Gabriel Medina, as well as “Caught”, an adaptation of Harlan Coben’s work, which was helmed by Miguel Cohan and Hernán Goldfrid. These productions have garnered significant attention upon their releases on Netflix.
Enhance that capacity for creating captivating comedy, drama, and now extensive science fiction, and the Spanish-speaking Latin American market is poised to attract even more investment across various regions. On a global scale, both audiences and producers are increasingly exposed to the region’s unique and profound stories, such as “The Eternaut,” offering an engaging journey with a meaningful message, thereby subtly increasing the excitement level.
Argentina holds significant value for numerous reasons. Firstly, the caliber of content created in Argentina, encompassing both fiction and non-fiction, is exceptionally high. We strive to deliver premium, ambitious content to our subscribers. Additionally, Argentinians have a strong affinity for Argentinian content. Our members frequently request more Argentine content, but with a greater emphasis on ambition, quality, and diversity. To meet the expectations of our audience, it’s crucial that we continue to produce such content, as we are ultimately accountable to our subscribers,” Ramos explained.
The show is deeply rooted in Argentine culture, with Buenos Aires serving as an integral part of the characters’ identities. Instead of poker, they play the Ibero-Latin card game Truco, and Argentine rock music fills the air to set the tone. These elements, while appealing to a wider audience, also give the series a unique, undeniable local flavor.
Mosteirin stated, ‘We appreciate stories reflecting our distinctive cultural characteristics, helping us identify and cherish our identity – something we both embrace and question, shaping our uniqueness and complexity. Art serves as a peculiar reflection, prompting us to ponder on the reasons behind our nature.’ This project encouraged us, pushed us, made us re-examine the artistic heritage of our nation, comparing the period when the initial piece was created with our present, the apprehensions of that time with the aspirations of today,” he continued.
The project suggests that solving problems requires community effort, and considering today’s global divisions, the show offers comfort while emphasizing that shared unawareness can lead to either collective anger or collective action. Its messages remain relevant today, resonating just as deeply as when they were initially expressed.
The depicted terror is authentic and tangible, as Ramos pointed out, “Stories connected to contemporary happenings continue to resonate. It’s true that human beings have consistent struggles and challenges. The setting may change, or technology might advance, but the fundamental desires – to love, to be loved, to find happiness, to explore, to seek, to be curious – these haven’t altered.
