Rodrigue, a Louisiana native, was recognized for incorporating Cajun culture in his art.
Director Sean O’Malley expressed his hope that people would view ‘Blue’ as a homage to George Rodrigue’s lasting influence on Louisiana’s art and culture, both locally and globally. Rodrigue’s story is complex and incredibly inspiring, with his striking oak trees, emotive Cajun portraits, and iconic Blue Dog paintings forming a rich tapestry. These masterpieces tell an extraordinary tale and serve as a powerful symbol of Rodrigue’s resilience and the profound effect he and his art have had on countless lives,” Sean O’Malley stated.
In this one-hour program, broadcasted by WLAE in New Orleans and disseminated through American Public Television, we find snippets from Rodrigue’s last interview along with interviews of his family members and individuals such as former New Orleans mayor Marc Morial and artist James Michalopoulos.
Jacques Rodrigue, son and executive director of the George Rodrigue Foundation of the Arts, stated, ‘Blue’ provides a close, intimate look at my father and his pioneering work. This documentary skillfully showcases the transformation in his artwork, his profound affection for Cajun culture, the Blue Dog’s rise as a pop symbol, and his distinctive role in American art history. My dad was, and remains, an icon, not just for Louisiana, but for the entire nation.
