Movies You’ll Miss: Netflix Loses Classics in May 2025

As spring continues its bloom, and with each passing month comes another change to the Netflix library. In just a few weeks, some of cinema’s all-time greatest films will be saying goodbye to the service. So, if you’re a fan of sci-fi, comics, or Academy Awards, pay attention because this might be your final opportunity to stream these movies for a while. Here are the top films departing from Netflix in May 2025.

‘Blade Runner: The Final Cut’

Leaving May 1

In casual conversation among science fiction enthusiasts, they often discuss the defining features and recurring themes of their beloved genre, and more likely than not, they’re referring to Blade Runner. This outstanding work of cyberpunk storytelling presents Rick Deckard (played by Harrison Ford), a “Blade Runner” who holds the duty of retiring Replicants – artificial beings that are extremely challenging to tell apart from humans.

Rather than a fast-paced action thriller, Ridley Scott’s masterpiece delves more into introspective art cinema, exploring the question of what it truly means to be human in a world where technology has advanced significantly. The film suggests that empathy could hold the answer to this question. It also boasts stunning visuals and thought-provoking world-building that eerily mirrors our current times. The movie, known as Ridley Scott’s “Final Cut”, is available on Netflix but will be leaving the platform on May 1.

‘Schindler’s List’

Leaving May 1

Initially, Steven Spielberg was perceived as a director more focused on style than content. However, this perception shifted dramatically with the release of “Schindler’s List,” a profoundly moving depiction of the Holocaust. Liam Neeson delivered an outstanding performance as Oskar Schindler, a German industrialist who rescued over a thousand Jewish refugees by employing them in his factories. Similarly, Ralph Fiennes gave an unforgettable portrayal as Amon Goeth, one of the most chilling screen villains ever.

By the end of this weekend, don’t miss your opportunity to witness a strikingly mature and reserved masterpiece on Netflix that silenced Spielberg’s doubters forever and earned him both Best Picture and Director Oscars.

Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man’ Trilogy

Leaving May 1

In this day and age, where comic-book movies seem to rule the cinemas, not many can rival Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy for me, a cinephile. Before we were introduced to Andrew Garfield or Tom Holland as our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, an entire generation was captivated by the endearingly awkward Tobey Maguire. From the moment he stepped into the role, Maguire proved to be one of the most brilliant casting choices for a comic book film that I’ve ever seen.

In Raimi’s trilogy, the collection of villains remains unmatched by many in the genre. Willem Dafoe’s portrayal of the Green Goblin was simply outstanding, and Alfred Molina’s performance as Doc Ock in Spider-Man 2 was nearly Oscar-worthy. While Spider-Man 3 fell short as a conclusion, it still had its highlights. As a whole, this trilogy, which is set to depart from Netflix on May 1st, continues to impress powerfully.

‘Whiplash’

Leaving May 1

It’s fair to say that among independent films from the 2010s, none has left as significant an impact as Whiplash. This film catapulted Damien Chazelle into a successful directorial career and earned J.K. Simmons, who was unfortunately underappreciated at the time, an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. In the movie, Simmons portrays Terrence Fletcher, a music teacher reminiscent of Full Metal Jacket‘s drill sergeants, and his intense bond with his student Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller) is fraught with tension.

Eager to excel as a renowned jazz drummer, Neiman goes beyond his emotional boundaries, enduring frequent verbal criticism from Fletcher. This intense journey offers a thought-provoking exploration of the thin line separating perfection and obsession. The climax is simply breathtaking – one of the most memorable endings of the 2010s. Don’t miss your chance to witness this captivating story unfold on Netflix, as May 1st marks its final showing.
