Wow, you didn’t expect this! The title you see belongs to Season 6, Episode 6 of The Handmaid’s Tale. Unfortunately, it’s not a pleasant surprise. A massive plot twist unfolds that puts the Mayday operation in jeopardy and thwarts all the efforts made by June (Elisabeth Moss) and her team. And to make matters worse, this turn of events is one that none of us anticipated – or fervently wished wouldn’t happen.
In this latest episode, a significant turn of events unfolded, and these developments carry immense consequences. Fans are on tenterhooks, eagerly anticipating how the storyline will unfold in Episode 7. So, let’s discuss what transpired in the episode thus far.
The Jezebel’s Plan Was Foiled, But June Isn’t Giving Up
Following their rescue by Commander Joseph Lawrence (Bradley Whitford), June and Moira (Samira Wiley) are pondering their next course of action. June remains determined to bring down Gilead and seeks Joseph’s support in this endeavor. After reconciling over June’s past failure to assist Eleanor, Joseph’s wife who took her own life, June persuades Joseph by appealing to his ambition for power and authority.
Next week, I can assure you, June, that every one of those commanders who’ve been criticizing me and whom I find distasteful will no longer be around. Hearing that, Joseph merely shrugged and said he saw two options: either he joins forces with me once more or faces the wall himself. Given the circumstances, it’s an obvious choice for him – he’s on board.
Initially, June has to go back to Jezebel’s to get some essential items they forgot there. However, Joseph suggests it’s not possible for her to do so. In the end, she asks Nick (Max Minghella), someone she trusts will help, and he agrees to do it. As he passes Janine (Madeline Brewer) in the hallway, he gives her a secretive nod, indicating his support for her.
When Nick encounters June, he openly confesses that she’s the finest aspect of his existence. Flashbacks of their past moments serve as a nostalgic reminder to viewers of their deep-seated love, even amidst the intricate circumstances they find themselves in. These scenes also underscore Nick’s past insecurity and arguably his present uncertainties. Nick humorously mused that June wouldn’t have given him a second glance in his previous life. His best prospects back then were limited to helping her with her groceries or driving her Uber.
Even though deeply in love with June, Nick decides to escort her home for safety. However, upon arrival, a light is on and Nick’s father-in-law, Commander Gabriel Wharton (Josh Charles), is visible through the window – he was expected to be gone. Nick then directs June to seek refuge at Serena’s (Yvonne Strahovski) place instead, promising her safety there. But as Nick steps into his house, a surprising encounter with Gabriel occurs, and the situation takes an unexpected turn.
Nick’s Shocking Betrayal Throws a Massive Wrench Into the Plans
Gabriel confronts Nick and expresses his suspicion that Nick has been visiting a brothel, potentially deceiving his wife, Rose (Carey Cox), who is Gabriel’s daughter. However, Gabriel doesn’t truly believe this to be the case. Instead, Gabriel feels the deception runs much deeper. He shares with Nick how he’s started piecing together some facts. The mysterious death of a young man who was shot and survived but later passed away in the hospital shortly after Nick paid him a visit can’t simply be a coincidence.
He warns Nick, “These untruths could lead to your downfall,” implying that Nick’s actions could result in him losing custody. This line resonates with Nick, as it reminds him of his responsibilities – he has a biological daughter (Nichole/Holly), is possibly in love with June, but most importantly, he has a wife and an unborn son, whom he should prioritize and focus on.
At Serena’s home, June deceives her by claiming she visited to invite Nick to Alaska for his daughter’s sake. Although Serena is skeptical, she plays along. The two women engage in an open discussion, during which Serena brings up her engagement to Gabriel. In response, June cautions her, recalling that their relationship with Commander Fred Waterford started off just as harmoniously, and advises her to stay vigilant.
Upon Nick’s arrival, he appears agitated. He confides in June, suggesting they flee to Paris together. This proposition leaves June puzzled by her feelings, yet they share a kiss, hinting at a romance that many fans have anticipated: June and Nick could be destined for each other. Coincidentally, Gabriel drops by to see Serena at that moment. Nick and June hide in a cupboard, eavesdropping on their conversation.
Gabriel reveals that Nick disclosed their strategy against Gilead due to fear of punishment from his father-in-law, thereby exposing their plan. Consequently, the operation has been compromised and Jezebel’s has been shut down by Gabriel in an attempt to halt it. June looks dejected as she gazes at a sorrowful Nick, who appears remorseful.
June is deeply concerned and enraged towards Nick, as it seems his actions could potentially lead to a tragic outcome for all the women working at Jezebel’s, among them being Janine. This fear of potential doom makes June feel terrified.
Why Nick Might Have Finally Had Enough
Right from the start, Nick seemed like a trustworthy individual. Originally serving as Fred’s chauffeur, he additionally functioned as a protector and part of the Eyes, monitoring activities within Gilead and alerting to any suspicious occurrences. As a young, vigorous man, Serena found herself drawn to Nick, sensing that there was already a mutual affection between him and June. She asked him to sleep with June in order to conceive a child for the Waterfords, leveraging their growing attraction as an opportunity to fulfill this request.
Nick and June’s bond deepened, blossoming into a romantic connection. On numerous occasions, Nick went above and beyond to assist June. Although Nick was once a resident of Gilead, before that, he was a young man who had been easily influenced and indoctrinated due to his vulnerability and longing for purpose. Raised in poverty, joining the Sons of Jacob seemed like the ideal way for him to improve his life. However, his allegiance to Gilead’s beliefs was never wholeheartedly embraced by him.
The instance that awakened his awareness about Gilead’s grim reality was when the former Waterford’s handmaid committed suicide in her chamber. Alongside Rita (Amanda Brugel), he found her, but it was already too late for him to save her. This tragic event instantly sensitized and empathized him towards June upon their initial encounter. He was deeply affected by what had transpired to the woman before June and yearned to shield her from a similar fate.
Over time, Nick climbed his way up and earned the title of commander during Season 6. Despite having a spouse and another child on the way, Nick continues to long for June. In Season 5, when June is intentionally hit by a vehicle in Canada, Nick journeys to see her in the hospital and stays by her side, without June being aware of his presence.
Over time, especially since June reconnected with her husband Luke (O-T Fagbenle), Nick has started to doubt if there’s a genuine future for them. Although he doesn’t love his current life, he finds comfort in it. He has a wife, child, a good job, and esteem, things he never expected to have. Yet, he remains unhappy. It seems like the fact that June, who he considers the best thing in his life, only reaches out when she needs something might be causing him great distress.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but empathize with Nick, a man who’s essentially a good soul. However, his past might be coming back to haunt him in this current predicament. You see, when the steel mill where he, his father, and his troubled older brother Joshua worked closed down, it was Nick who took on the responsibility of caring for their family. Regrettably, Joshua succumbed to addiction shortly after Nick joined Sons of Jacob, leaving us uncertain about the fate of their father.
Now, viewers might find themselves annoyed by Nick’s apparent betrayal, but let’s not forget that he’s been through more than most. He didn’t have an easy life before Gilead took over, and the people who now depend on him wouldn’t have given him the time of day under normal circumstances. Yet, because of his standing, moral compass, and yearning to be accepted, Nick is exploited by those who should care for him instead.
It’s understandable that Nick finally reached his limit, especially after getting caught by his father-in-law with no other options left. His impassioned plea to June might have been a desperate attempt to prove that he was loved and cherished. If she had agreed, it would have all been worthwhile, showing that she truly wanted to be with him above everything else. The question remains: would June have joyfully fled to the City of Lights with Nick and Nichole/Holly if Nick hadn’t betrayed her? Fans, along with perhaps Nick himself, will never know for certain.
