season 3’s premiere generated a lot of excitement following the dramatic ending of season 2, where Natalie met her demise. The ensuing uncertainty about how the storyline would unfold was palpable. However, the series didn’t unfold as expected. As the grown-up characters grappled with life without Natalie, the teenagers continued their lives oblivious to the change.
Season 3 brought fresh faces and unexpected turns, setting it apart from previous seasons. For instance, Natalie’s tragic end was not universally welcomed. However, these narrative shifts achieved what the show intended – leaving viewers astonished. After a long wait, fans were taken aback by the unforeseen twists that the writers had prepared.
The Yellowjackets Survived Winter Without Further Incident
By the conclusion of Season 2, it seemed as though the Yellowjackets had come to terms with their grim destiny. With their shelter reduced to ashes and Natalie ascending to the role of group leader, it hinted at a turn of events that fans were expecting. A harsh winter was poised to bring about hunger, ultimately leading the girls to consider cannibalism. However, when Season 3 resumed, things couldn’t have been more different from those dire predictions.
Initially, Natalie adapted exceptionally to leadership and fostered a friendly environment filled with games and provisions of animal meat. The group improvised living quarters, managing to survive in a relatively comfortable manner given their circumstances. However, this was not the image fans envisioned. Of course, nothing stays permanent. Troubled times were on the horizon; they simply unfolded in an unexpected manner.
Coach Ben Was Innocent of Supposed Crimes
The major setback in the Yellowjackets’ strategy for survival occurred when their homestead crumbled. By the end of Season 2, the group was shocked as Coach Ben, uneasy about consuming human flesh, vanished. This disappearance coincided with the structure’s demolition, making him the prime suspect.
After coming back, Ben continued to assert his innocence. The primary motivation for his departure was fear of what his team had evolved into. Upon hearing about the cabin from Mari, Ben showed a suitable level of surprise. Although it wasn’t entirely apparent who caused the fire, Ben appeared to be off the hook, particularly when he made a beeline for danger’s edge.
Natalie Was Never the Antler Queen
In Season 2, events laid the groundwork for another misleading clue, as a harsh winter approached and the gravity of their survival situation became more apparent. Eating Jackie was merely the first step in their lack of preparedness, and the understanding that they would resort to cannibalism made it evident that whoever took charge would be responsible for these difficult decisions. In the Season 2 finale, when Natalie was chosen as leader, it seemed like she might become the relentless figure guiding them through the ordeal.
As Season 3 wore on, it grew increasingly apparent that things wouldn’t go as expected. As Natalie fostered an egalitarian team environment where everyone’s contributions mattered, she maintained her compassionate nature. This was clearly not the type of person who would orchestrate the Yellowjackets to hunt each other for entertainment or survival. True to form, Natalie’s unwavering commitment to what was right ultimately cost her leadership. Her single act of sparing Coach Ben sealed her fate as a leader.
The Screaming Trees Had a Logical Explanation
In Season 3, Lottie persisted with her peculiar worship of the wilderness entity called the Wilderness, encouraging Travis to experience visions too. Despite Travis’ reluctance towards Lottie’s connection with nature, the forest seemed to communicate something else entirely. The Yellowjackets were alarmed when they heard mysterious sounds emanating from the woods, noises that suggested the trees themselves were in agony.
Lottie grew more obsessive due to this incident, but it turned out to be nothing like the mysterious monsters from “Lost”. Instead, a pair of scientists were studying the mating calls of frogs and amplifying their sounds. It was the amplification that made the girls believe there was some supernatural occurrence happening. This revelation served as another plot twist, leaving us questioning whether the supernatural was present in this world or not.
Van’s Death Was Unnecessarily Shocking
In their final moments, it appeared as though death was claiming all the Yellowjackets, regardless of their worth within the group. After a season brimming with loss, Van, who had once been Taissa’s cherished companion in Season 2, was revealed to be battling terminal cancer. The third season centered around finding a means to utilize the wilderness as a tool for her salvation, but ultimately proved futile. By the end of the season, Melissa, with no apparent justification, fatally stabbed Van.
Van’s demise was especially hard to accept because her moral integrity remained steadfast throughout. Despite facing death twice during the initial season, Van maintained every bit of her human essence. Given the challenging circumstances the girls found themselves in, if anyone deserved to endure, it was Van. Her passing came as a tremendous surprise.
Lottie’s Death Was of Her Own Making
As a film enthusiast, I wasn’t all that taken aback by the revelation that Lottie essentially orchestrated her own downfall due to her peculiar belief system. However, up until the Season 3 finale, it appeared as though Yellowjackets had chosen to distance itself from this particular narrative thread. Shauna’s visit to Lottie’s father seemed to close that chapter definitively. But in the final episode, a twist unfolded: Misty unmasked Lottie’s killer, and it was none other than the very person who had brought about her demise – albeit accidentally.
Lottie met her end due to Callie’s actions, and Lottie had anticipated this encounter as she wanted to share some hard truths with Callie before it was too late. Lottie saw Callie as a manifestation of the wilderness and her mother’s dark nature, and she held a certain degree of pride in this belief. This perception led Callie to shove Lottie down the stairs. Unfortunately for Callie, her deepest apprehensies were validated: She discovered that she was indeed like her mother.
Kodiak Was Not Long For This World
Joel McHale’s portrayal of survival guide “Kodiak” or “Kodi” could have potentially been a recurring role throughout the season. Unfortunately for him, his character’s end came swiftly and brutally. It appears that among these girls, men don’t tend to survive very long, and Kodi was no exception following the Yellowjackets’ captivity of him and Hannah. Given his expertise in escaping their predicament, Kodi had the strongest motivation to stay alive. Ironically, this very skill led to his demise.
Amongst those who survived, it became clear to many that Kodi was the path to the actual world, and some perceived this as a danger. Swiftly asserting authority over the camp, Shauna prohibited anyone from seeking aid. Recognizing the impending situation, even Hannah, the scientist accompanying Kodi, realized that there was no avoiding Shauna’s control over the teenagers. To demonstrate her allegiance and ensure her own survival, she ended Kodi’s life. Without a hint of warning, Hannah switched loyalties, giving no clue as to her alliance with Shauna.
Shauna Became the Antagonist of Yellowjackets
Throughout both the current storyline and back in the ’90s, Shauna’s true nature was evident. For much of the show, she served as the primary perspective, with the narrative often seen through her eyes. However, her questionable behavior in Season 3 sparked significant worry, even among her own family. This turbulence foreshadowed the shocking revelation that Shauna would ultimately emerge as the main antagonist of the series.
Following the tragic loss of Jackie and her own child in the wild, Shauna hardened into a hollow individual, discarding any emotions related to camaraderie or regret. This tough exterior persisted up until the present, where Shauna encountered her wilderness persona again. A significant indicator was that despite Jeff and Callie abandoning her, she only grew more entrenched in her feelings. In fact, she thrived when battling for survival in the wilderness, but viewers could sense with foreboding that this was a reflection of her lowest point instead.
Season 3 Culminated In the Ultimate Alliance
Fans might have been surprised by Shauna’s downward spiral into her worst self, but it offered a unique perspective in some aspects. Eventually, it became clear that Shauna would face consequences for her actions, particularly the way she treated Jeff and her indirect role in Van’s demise. Interestingly, two characters who had previously kept their distance from each other found common ground. Throughout the season, Misty held a belief that there was something amiss with Shauna, even though they weren’t closely related. Her intuition wasn’t misguided, as it turned out that Shauna indeed had issues.
After Shauna guided them to the house where Van was killed, Taissa began to adopt this perspective: It became evident that action needed to be taken against Shauna, and it was Taissa and Misty who would carry it out. For a long time, Misty had not received the recognition she deserved due to her unique personality quirks. However, she was intelligent, and combined with Tai, they could effectively bring down Shauna. At the beginning of the series, it didn’t appear that the Yellowjackets would turn against each other, but it seems like that might happen in Season 4.
Natalie Finally Got One Over On Shauna
This season, Shauna found herself at odds with nearly everyone, but Natalie posed the greatest challenge. As the charismatic leader among humans, Natalie possessed the ability to persuade others to join her cause – a rescue effort that should not have been disputed. However, despite the lack of controversy, Shauna managed to convince most of the camp to reject any rescue proposal. Consequently, she had to closely monitor her political adversary to maintain her position.
Natalie relentlessly sought means to rescue her team, ultimately succeeding in the climax of the episode. The faction resisting Shauna had repeatedly tried to elude her, but she consistently managed to unmask them. Working together with Hannah, they devised a ruse to secretly extract Natalie, allowing her to make an important call using the recently fixed SAT phone. This triumphant moment was inevitable, yet providing Natalie with this emotional scene stood out as the season’s most captivating and a welcome change from Shauna’s ominous reign.
