When you come across the name FromSoftware, it likely brings to mind captivating games, intricately crafted worlds filled with rich lore and distinctive combat mechanics – elements that set Dark Souls and Elden Ring apart. So when a developer who previously worked for FromSoftware embarks on a solo endeavor, anticipation naturally builds up. Independent projects, free from the constraints of larger studios, can be exceptionally unique. However, this time around, things didn’t go as planned.
Rise of Rebellion won’t be your next Soulslike obsession
On April 21, 2025, Rise of Rebellion debuted on Steam, but it didn’t take long for players to realize that it wasn’t living up to its promise. The game suffered from numerous technical glitches, awkward control schemes, uneven balancing, and a general lack of refinement that made it feel incomplete. Although some appreciated the game’s ambition, the feedback was overwhelmingly critical. In just a few days, Steam reviews turned negative, and the player count plummeted rapidly, despite starting with a relatively small base.
Among all the subpar games I’ve encountered throughout my gaming journey, this one stands out as exceptionally poor. The controls are atrocious and the outcome of parrying or dodging seems to be solely determined by random chance, making it impossible to know when a special attack will trigger. It’s hard to believe that such a game was released in this dismal state, rendering it nearly unplayable.

The default settings for both keyboard and mouse usage are disappointing. Moreover, the mouse acceleration feature, which cannot be turned off, poses an issue.
In simpler terms, the initial settings for using a keyboard and mouse aren’t great, and it’s frustrating that you can’t turn off the mouse speed adjustment function.

As reported by Automaton, the creator of Rise of Rebellion, Hytacka, publicly acknowledged that the game did not perform well. Consequently, he’s not intending to roll out significant updates; instead, he’ll focus on fixing bugs and potentially adding an optional easy mode. However, potential loss of support from his publisher, Kodansha, might delay future projects. Despite suggestions for smaller scale ventures, Hytacka remains committed to his grand, ambitious concepts.
