In the debut trailer for “The Smashing Machine,” which is a biographical film, Dwayne Johnson experiences an extraordinary screen metamorphosis as he portrays two-time UFC heavyweight champion Mark Kerr. On a Tuesday morning, production company A24 unveiled this gripping drama.
In his first solo directing endeavor, Benny Safdie – known for co-directing and writing movies like “Uncut Gems” and “Good Time” with his brother – takes the helm of the film titled “The Smashing Machine.” Besides Johnson, the star-studded cast features Emily Blunt as Dawn Staples, Kerr’s wife, Bas Rutten, Lyndsey Gavin, and Oleksandr Usyk. Following their collaboration in Disney’s “Jungle Cruise” in 2021, Johnson and Blunt are now working together again, this time joining forces with Leonardo DiCaprio for a Hawaiian crime thriller directed by Martin Scorsese.
As a devoted fan, I’d like to share some insights about Kenny Kerr, a mixed martial artist whose career spanned from 1997 to 2009. He was an extraordinary athlete who managed to win four ADCC World Championships during that time. However, his life wasn’t always smooth sailing; in fact, it was often marked by challenges.
In 2002, a captivating HBO documentary titled “The Smashing Machine” was released, focusing on Kerr’s battles with substance abuse and his tumultuous relationships – both personal and professional. This film provided an intimate look into the complexities of his life.
As a film enthusiast, I’ve always been drawn to the raw and authentic storytelling of directors like the Safdie brothers. That’s why I expressed my desire to collaborate with them on “The Smashing Machine.” Benny Safdie’s work is not just about creating; it’s about pushing boundaries, making stories that are gritty and real.
At this stage in my career, I yearn for challenges that I haven’t faced before. I want to produce films that resonate, that delve into the complexities of humanity and the struggles we face. Pain is a part of life, and I believe it’s essential to explore these themes on the silver screen.
In this production, Kerr and Safdie collaborate as joint writers. The producers for the project include Safdie, Johnson, Danny Garcia, Eli Bush, Hiram Garcia, and David Koplan. Tracey Landon takes on the role of executive producer.
“The Smashing Machine” comes to theaters on Oct. 3. Watch the trailer below.
