Will Tommy’s Major Change in The Last of Us Season 2 Affect His Fate?

Attention: The third episode of The Last of Us season 2 introduces a significant deviation from Tommy’s storyline as presented in the video game, leaving me intrigued about its impact on the rest of the series. Gabriel Luna portrays Tommy Miller in the cast of The Last of Us season 2, delivering one of my favorite performances in the show. His portrayal, alongside Pedro Pascal’s Joel, effectively conveys the strong bond between the brothers that feels genuine and heartfelt. I was eager to see more of him following my recent playthrough of The Last of Us Part II.

In episode 3 of season 2 for The Last of Us, Dina and Ellie embark on a journey towards Seattle, seeking retribution against Abby and her group who killed Joel. This event is significant in the original game, but the events leading up to it are modified for the TV adaptation. As more alterations are made in The Last of Us season 2’s narrative, I can’t help but question the potential consequences these changes might have. The storyline in Seattle appears to be quite distinct from its counterpart in the video game.

Tommy Doesn’t Go To Seattle To Hunt Abby Like He Does In The Last Of Us Part 2 Game

Tommy Is Much Less Reckless In The TV Show

In The Last of Us Part II, Tommy is the one with Joel when he gets captured and killed. This makes him privy to information about Abby’s group and knows how to track them down. He discusses this briefly with Ellie in the game, then, in the dead of night, he departs from Jackson on a quest for revenge. Interestingly, it is Maria who encounters Ellie as she exits the city, granting her permission to retrieve Tommy. These relationships undergo a significant transformation in the TV adaptation.

In the television series, Dina is with Joel when he passes away. She subsequently searches for clues about Abby’s destination and learns that her group is associated with the Washington Liberation Front (W.L.F.) from Eugene. Later, Ellie and Dina independently decide to travel to Seattle, which modifies the sequence of events. This decision could potentially prompt Tommy to pursue them later in an attempt to bring them back, although it’s uncertain at this point.

Tommy Not Going To Seattle After Joel’s Death Makes Sense With TLOU’s Jackson Story

Tommy Has A Town To Lead & A Family To Take Care Of

As a film enthusiast, I can say that Tommy’s conspicuous absence during Joel’s death scene isn’t merely coincidental. It gave him the chance to participate in a massive battle that doesn’t feature in the video games. In season 2, episode 3, Tommy valiantly defended Jackson against the relentless onslaught of the Infected horde, demonstrating his pivotal position as one of the town’s leading figures. He single-handedly took down hundreds of the Infected and shielded the commune from utter destruction. The revised role he plays in the TV series undeniably makes it plausible that he would be less reckless, given the gravity of his responsibilities.

In The Last of Us Part II, Tommy and Maria’s relationship mirrors that depicted in the game series, but unlike in the games, they don’t have a son. Given his role as both a leader and a father, Tommy can’t abandon his responsibilities by fleeing to another state to indulge in violence. Instead, he needs to stay put, focusing on rebuilding Jackson, safeguarding his wife, his child, and the community he’s diligently built over time.

Will Tommy Go To Seattle At All In The Last Of Us Season 2?

It’s Not Too Late For Tommy To Show Up With A Posse

Considering this scenario, it’s quite possible that the narrative of season 2 could shift dramatically if Tommy doesn’t go to Seattle. One idea I’m mulling over is that he and Jesse might assemble a small group instead, and they would arrive at crucial moments to aid Ellie or Dina later in the season. It seems unlikely that Jesse would have left before Ellie and Dina departed, but given that they’ve already set off, Jesse might feel compelled to join them, especially since he rekindled his relationship with Dina a few months after Joel’s demise.

In episode 3 of The Last of Us season 2, there’s a scene where Tommy observes Jesse performing tasks in Jackson for a moment, possibly indicating his pride in the young man’s active involvement. This might suggest that he plans to give Jesse responsibility for leading a group to retrieve Ellie and Dina, implying he will remain behind. However, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he’ll take action and bring them additional support instead!
