In Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings films, Arwen’s character underwent substantial modifications, becoming more akin to another female character penned by J.R.R. Tolkien. Generally, I’m not a fan of extensive alterations from book to screen. Nevertheless, there are instances where exceptions can be made. Jackson’s Lord of the Rings series is widely admired as an accurate representation of Tolkien’s lore. This appreciation stems from the fact that many of the modifications Jackson introduced aligned with the overarching themes present in Tolkien’s works, a trait evident in Arwen’s portrayal.

In the epic narrative of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings,” female characters tend to take a backseat, with the Fellowship of the Ring consisting solely of males, and notable women being limited to Galadriel and Eowyn. However, it’s worth noting that Tolkien’s richly woven mythos extends far beyond the tale of Frodo, and his other “Lord of the Rings” stories introduce a few more substantial female characters. Although men still seem to hold the main roles, the powerful female Maiar and Elves in Tolkien’s world have left an undeniable impact. Regrettably, we might never witness these characters grace the big screen, but Peter Jackson managed to come pretty close.

Initially, I might have grumbled about Jackson omitting Glorfindel’s significant scene from “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring“. Yet, with time, I grew fond of the part that the films assigned to Arwen. In Tolkien’s writings, Arwen was merely a secondary character. She served as a motivator for Aragorn, but Frodo never had a substantial conversation or interaction with her. Contrastingly, in the “Fellowship of the Ring” movie, Arwen emerged as a heroic figure.

In the original storyline, it was Glorfindel the elf who rescued Frodo from the Ringwraiths and transported him to Rivendell while their adversary was swept away by the river. However, director Jackson decided to omit Glorfindel entirely, instead giving Arwen, played by Liv Tyler, a more active role in the story. This transformation made her a powerful, warrior-like elf who didn’t simply wait for her love interest to finish his task but actively assisted him. This not only deepened our emotional connection to Aragorn’s romantic journey but also introduced a heroic character that might have otherwise remained unseen on screen.

This Might Be The Closest We Get To Seeing Luthien On Screen

Arwen’s most impactful scene in Jackson’s The Fellowship of the Ring occurs when she draws her sword against the Ringwraiths, challenging them for Frodo. Her determination and strength are evident, aspects not typically associated with her character in the books. However, it’s important to note that Tolkien did write about a strong female elf character – Luthien. Known from the story Beren and Luthien, she embarks on an epic quest with her human lover to retrieve a Silmaril from Morgoth in the First Age. Despite the romance’s tragic nature, Luthien is portrayed as a powerful and heroic figure throughout.

Luthien has never appeared in live-action before, but Peter Jackson appears to have portrayed her character through Arwen in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. This connection is significant because, as depicted in Tolkien’s books, Aragorn’s lover was a reflection of the legendary First Age elf heroine Luthien. In fact, it is said that Luthien bears a strong resemblance to her, and Arwen’s choice to become mortal mirrors the story of Beren and Luthien, in which the elven maiden made the same selfless sacrifice. Luthien is one of the most significant female characters in J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings.” The author named his wife after her because the unwavering love between Beren and Luthien mirrored his own romance. Peter Jackson emphasized Arwen’s importance and power in his “Lord of the Rings” movies, which adds to Luthien’s significance. Yet, it’s disappointing that a movie adaption of “Beren and Luthien,” a captivating love story with action-packed adventure, hasn’t been produced yet. Given its potential, one might wonder why Hollywood hasn’t taken up the project.

It appears that New Line Cinema and Warner Bros are working on multiple “Lord of the Rings” movies, but we only know much about one titled “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.” After this, it’s unclear what will follow. Adapting “Beren and Luthien,” a posthumously published work by Tolkien, might face legal complications as the estate has been hesitant to grant film and TV rights for such works since his death. However, it’s possible that these issues could be resolved in the future. For now, we have Arwen from the “Lord of the Rings” movie series.
