Don’t expect “Back to the Future” to return from the past.
At Universal Fan Fest Nights last Friday, as reported by People, “Back to the Future” screenwriter Bob Gale made it clear that there will be no further sequels to the iconic 1985 movie following the finale of Cobra Kai hinting at a TV spin-off.
Gale expressed puzzlement,” said he, “as to why they continually discuss that matter. I wonder if they believe that simply repeating it will make us eventually carry it out?
He went on saying, “You know, they always ask in interviews, ‘Bob, when will there be a ‘Back to the Future 4′?’, ‘A prequel’?, ‘A spinoff’? The answer is never. It’s best left as it is. It’s not flawless, but as Bob Zemeckis once said, ‘It’s good enough.’
As for me, I’d need quite a bit of persuasion if the authorities were to ask me to resurrect the franchise. It wouldn’t be an easy task to undertake.
If a massive corporate force threatens, ‘Agree with us or we’ll harm your kids,’ Gale playfully responded, ‘Of course not! We wouldn’t want our children harmed.’ However, even Steven Spielberg needs to approve it as well. And just as he wouldn’t create another ‘E.T.’, he understands our disinterest in more ‘Back to the Future’. He respects our decision and has always supported us in this.
Reflecting on the 40-year journey of “Back to the Future,” Gale expresses his pride in contributing to a movie that continues to be cherished as a timeless classic by different generations.
It’s wonderful to witness the next generation of children who are impacted by this, exclaiming, ‘Wow, my parents were once kids too!’ This is why I believe the cycle continues, as each child eventually understands this truth. Our film was made with that idea in mind, and it’s delightful to see people rediscovering it.
Even though “Back to the Future” isn’t being shown on screens, it has been transformed into a musical instead. Gale expressed his humility in response to the appreciation shown by international fans.
Gale shared that we’ve created ‘Back to the Future: The Musical,’ which is currently running in London and is now touring across the U.S. We’ve recently premiered it in Tokyo in Japanese, and the enthusiasm for ‘Back to the Future’ there is just as intense, or even more so, as anywhere else. frankly, I’m amazed and astounded that Bob and I conceived something that has such enduring popularity.
Although no further “Back to the Future” movies are currently being made, the original film from 1985 was succeeded by “Back to the Future Part II” in 1989 and “Back to the Future Part III” a year later in 1990.
