For its 78th edition, the Cannes Film Festival has assembled an influential panel of judges, featuring Halle Berry, Jeremy Strong (known for “The Apprentice”), and Payal Kapadia, a renowned Indian director known for “All We Imagine as Light.
The jury for this event will include a diverse group of talents from different fields: filmmakers Hong Sangsoo and Carlos Reygadas, authors Leïla Slimani, Alba Rohrwacher (an actress), Dieudo Hamadi (a Congolese director, documentarist, and producer), as well as Mexican filmmaker and producer Carlos Reygadas. Previously announced was the news that Juliette Binoche would head the jury, taking over from Greta Gerwig who awarded Sean Baker’s “Anora” with the Palme d’Or.
Last year, both Strong and Kapadia attended the Cannes Film Festival, participating in competition. Strong featured in Ali Abbasi’s “The Apprentice,” where he played Roy Cohn, while Kapadia showcased her fiction debut, “All We Imagine as Light,” which earned the Grand Prize.
In Cannes last year, both Strong and Kapadia were part of the competition. Strong appeared in Ali Abbasi’s “The Apprentice” playing Roy Cohn, whereas Kapadia made her fiction debut with the award-winning film, “All We Imagine as Light.
The winners of this year’s competition will be announced on May 24 at the closing ceremony.
At the upcoming event, I’m excited to see Hollywood’s vibrant influence. Among the offerings, I can’t wait for Lynne Ramsay’s “Die, My Love,” a gripping thriller featuring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson. Also, Kristen Stewart’s “The Chronology of Water” will be showcased in Un Certain Regard. Of course, I’m looking forward to the final installment of the “Mission: Impossible” series. Spike Lee’s “Highest 2 Lowest,” starring Denzel Washington, is another must-watch. Kelly Reichardt’s heist movie “The Mastermind,” with Josh O’Connor in the lead role, is not to be missed either. Oliver Hermanus’ romantic film “The History of Sound,” featuring O’Connor and Paul Mescal, is sure to captivate audiences. Ari Aster’s “Eddington” boasts an impressive cast including Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Pedro Pascal, and Austin Butler. Lastly, Wes Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme” promises a stellar lineup with Benicio del Toro, Michael Cera, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Riz Ahmed, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Scarlett Johansson in key roles. Interestingly, Scarlett Johansson will also be at Cannes with her directorial debut, “Eleanor the Great,” in the Un Certain Regard section.
The Cannes Film Festival will take place May 13-24.
