Over the weekend, Sony’s film adaptation of “Until Dawn” earned a global box office total of $18 million. Interestingly, the movie credits list everyone involved in the production, except for Larry Fessenden and Graham Reznick – the creators of the original video game. Despite not being mentioned, these two aren’t entirely taken aback by this oversight, but they do express a sense of dissatisfaction about it.
Fessenden expressed to The Hollywood Reporter that he hadn’t made any assumptions, but had hoped they might include his name in the movie somehow, perhaps even during the closing credits. However, it seems there’s little regard for politeness in the entertainment industry.
As a passionate admirer, I can’t help but share my excitement about Until Dawn! While Fessenden and Reznick may not have been the original creators, their significant contribution is undeniable – they penned an astounding 10,000 script pages that shaped the game’s intricate branching narratives. Even though the movie brings back Peter Stormare as Dr. Hill, it offers a fresh, captivating storyline with all-new characters to keep us on our toes!
As a passionate gamer and one of the fortunate few who brought the Stranger and a radio DJ to life in the game, I jokingly shared my disappointment at not getting another chance to reprise those roles in the upcoming film adaptation. But let me make it clear, I’m not mad about the movie itself – Until Dawn is a fantastic franchise, after all.
However, what truly saddens me is that, as creators of video games based on existing properties, we don’t have any established mechanisms in place to ensure we receive proper recognition for our work in film adaptations. It feels like a missed opportunity, especially considering the significant contributions we make to the overall narrative and world-building.
Reznick stated, “It seems to me that the guilds aren’t adapting as quickly as the industry is abandoning conventional media types.” He also expressed uncertainty about the implications this might have on the industry’s future.
Previously employed as a storyline director at Sony, Kim MacAskill, expressed her thoughts in a post on LinkedIn concerning the upcoming “Until Dawn” movie omitting the creative team behind the original game. Furthermore, she launched a petition aimed at persuading Sony to revise the film’s credits to acknowledge the contributions of the game creators.
The writers of Until Dawn video game haven’t received credit in the movie, which doesn’t sit well with them, as expressed by a former SIE/PlayStation Narrative Director.

According to MacAskill’s account, the creative team behind Until Dawn worked tirelessly for many years, pouring their intellectual efforts into creating something extraordinary. They also expressed a sentiment that the world should recognize and appreciate their talents.
Until Dawn is now playing in theaters.
