The heartfelt drama “Souleymane’s Story,” created by Boris Lojkine and recently honored with two awards at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard and four Cesar Awards, has been obtained by Kino Lorber for the distribution rights in the United States and English-speaking regions of Canada.
Supported by an impressive debut from newcomer Abou Sangare, “Souleymane’s Story” is a suspenseful drama that follows a Guinean immigrant who works as a bicycle courier in Paris during the critical days leading up to his asylum interview. Kino Lorber notes that this film finds its inspiration in Cristian Mungiu’s “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” and socially conscious films directed by the Dardenne brothers.
The first-time actor Abou Sangare delivers a strong performance in “Souleymane’s Story”, which is about a Guinean immigrant working as a bike messenger in Paris before his asylum interview. This movie gets inspiration from films like “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” by Cristian Mungiu and movies made by the Dardenne brothers that focus on social issues.
After debuting at Cannes and securing the Jury Prize in Un Certain Regard, along with best actor for Abou Sangare, “Souleymane’s Story” has become a significant success within the art-house cinema scene in France, attracting around half a million viewers in French cinemas. Furthermore, it stood out as one of the most notable films during France’s awards season. The movie not only garnered four Cesar Awards but also secured a Lumiere Award (the French equivalent of the Golden Globes), two European Film Awards, and an additional accolade in the form of France’s top film honors.
Starting from August 1, Kino Lorber plans to debut the movie in cinemas. Afterward, it’ll be made available digitally, for educational purposes, and for home viewing.
Karoliina Dwyer, Vice President of Acquisitions at Kino Lorber, expressed great joy and pride in announcing that they will present ‘Souleymane’s Story‘ to North American viewers. This decision was made after negotiating the deal with Agathe Mauruc from Pyramide International.
As a movie critic, I’ve had the privilege of watching a masterpiece directed by Boris Lojkine. This film doesn’t just take you on a tour of Paris; it immerses you in the city through the eyes of Souleymane, an asylum seeker with a tight deadline for his immigration interview. The movie strikes a chord in today’s U.S. context, and after following Souleymane’s gripping journey, viewers might find themselves rethinking their perspective on delivery people.
As a cinematography enthusiast, I felt incredibly proud when I shared my vision for our film with Delphine Agut: to portray Paris in a way reminiscent of how American independent cinema showcases New York. To have this work screened in the city itself is truly meaningful to me. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Sean Baker and Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire for their generous support throughout our creative journey.
“Souleymane’s Story” is a Unité production, with the support of Canal+, Cine+.
