A swift player from Japan successfully completed the final level on the pre-release edition of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for the Nintendo Switch 2, which is slated to launch on June 5, 2025.
The Zelda series has always attracted a unique and unconventional community of speedrunners. In fact, it’s been over a decade now since players worldwide have been vying for the fastest completion times, starting from the early 2000s when they started tackling games like Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask.
By the year 2017, Zelda enthusiasts were thrilled to have a fresh game at their disposal, which offered quick completion times – Breath of the Wild. The open-world aspect of BotW lends itself wonderfully for those who enjoy breaking down a Zelda game.
It’s particularly applicable in this case since experienced players can quickly reach Hyrule Castle to defeat Ganon right off the bat. Yet, it doesn’t happen frequently that someone manages to complete a game weeks before its official release date.
Speedrunner beats BotW on Switch 2 before release
At a Switch 2 hands-on event in Tokyo, a Japanese speedrunner cleverly finished the second version of BotW for the Switch 2 by utilizing an auto-save stationed outside Hyrule Castle, as reported by Nintendo Insider.
In the rush of excitement over improved visuals, the speedrunner swiftly discarded all gear and raced through the castle, making a beeline for Ganon’s lair. The speedrunner’s nimbleness is evident as he employed agility-boosting methods to reduce his travel time.

Nonetheless, the encounters against Calamity Ganon and his Dark Beast form are particularly noteworthy, as Ikaboze managed to defeat them in an astonishingly short time. In fact, Ikaboze completed the game and rolled the credits in merely 20 minutes of play, making history by becoming the first person to conquer the Nintendo Switch 2 edition of Breath of the Wild before its official release.
After the launch of Switch 2 on June 5, many speedrunners are expected to make further attempts. However, it’s rare for a new record to be established before most gamers have had a chance to play the game themselves.
