Seth’s Role in The Last of Us Ep 3 Sparks Fan Fury

In a departure from the original game, The Last of Us Season 2’s third episode significantly elevates the role of character Seth for Ellie’s adventure, a shift that has left some fans feeling disgruntled.

Starting with the second season, it’s evident that The Last of Us is not hesitant to offer a unique perspective on events depicted in Part 2. For instance, rather than uncovering Abby’s past midway through the narrative, we were presented with her entire backstory within the initial two episodes.

In the TV show, Episode 3 veers off quite distinctly from the game’s narrative. While Ellie and Dina originally pursued Abby in Seattle in the storyline, this time around Tommy remains in Jackson to oversee its reconstruction following the horde attack. Moreover, he has a child with Maria to attend to now, which is why he doesn’t join them on their journey.

In that situation, it’s Seth who creates an escape route for Ellie, which could be seen as suspicious by certain fans.

The Last of Us Episode 3 annoys fans with Seth change

In the third episode, Dina shares that she has a contact who can equip them with ammunition, provisions, and essential supplies for their journey to Seattle. Hidden in the night, they encounter this individual, and it turns out to be none other than Seth.

Ellie exchanges her gun for a superior sniper rifle, and he refers to their quest to locate Abby as “our shared goal” (earlier in the episode, Seth supports Ellie’s plan to dispatch Joel’s murderer). As they prepare to depart, Ellie and Seth shake hands.

In this game, the usual scenario is just him apologizing and providing Ellie with steak sandwiches. However, there’s now a significant shift from the norm as we see a redemption storyline unfolding for a character who was primarily known for his prejudiced behavior. This change has left some viewers feeling uncomfortable or displeased.

“What really annoyed me was how Seth seemed to help them more than Tommy or Jesse. I can’t believe it, with everything that has happened between them! It’s just absurd.” Another user commented: “Seth of all people standing up for avenging Joel. Incredible.

1. “The reason we’re assigning Seth the role of defending Joel is unclear to me. He’s intolerant, and it seems unfair to offer him any form of forgiveness or rehabilitation. This really bothers me immensely.”

2. “I’m unsure about the decision to grant Seth a chance at redemption.”

3. “It doesn’t sit well with me that Seth is being chosen as Joel’s advocate. He’s prejudiced, and I don’t think he deserves any form of forgiveness or second chance.”

4. “I find it questionable that they are giving Seth a path to redemption.”

On The Last of Us podcast, Neil Druckmann expressed, “[Seth] understands that what happened to Joel was unjust and those responsible will face retribution, or they’ll meet the same fate.” And he added, “I admire that sentiment.

Sometimes, life can surprise us by having someone who seems completely different from us reflect our own selves unexpectedly. This causes us to reconsider our initial impressions or instincts. (Craig Mazin)

Additionally, it’s important to note that Seth’s actions might not necessarily constitute a redemptive arc. While he did aid Ellie by providing them with supplies and helping map out a path to Seattle, The Last of Us primarily explores the theme of the futility of revenge. In fact, Seth’s violent tendencies may inadvertently fuel Ellie’s desire for vengeance.

After Episode 3, if you believe him to be a “good person,” consider reconsidering your thoughts: merely assisting her doesn’t necessarily equate to doing the morally correct action.
