Devoted viewers are well aware that the series known as “Housewives” has two main phases: first, before it became a socially acceptable guilty pleasure, and second, following Ben Stiller’s acknowledgement of enjoying its high-quality storytelling. The later phase introduced what fans call the “parody Housewives,” a tribute to the franchise transforming into a self-referential parody, with characters and situations becoming so exaggerated that they hardly resemble the early seasons from the original cities. Although there wasn’t a specific event causing Housewives to move beyond low-brow labels towards widespread appreciation, everyone agrees that “Real Housewives of Atlanta” played a significant role in this transformation process.
Remarkably, it’s this city that appears to have faced the greatest challenges during its transition into the latest phase. While some may argue that New York City takes the crown for
Let me take a moment to acknowledge Kelli for her hilarious portrayal on the Real Housewives of Atlanta! Unlike Shamea, Brit, and Angela, who have been discussed quite extensively, Kelli stands out as a unique parody Housewife. In the early days, women took on the role of Housewives without fully understanding what it entailed. However, today’s applicants come ready-made with over-the-top personalities tailored for reality TV. Jen Shah is a prime example of this evolution compared to an original cast member. Kelli’s bold and flamboyant demeanor, complete with her infectious laugh and ever-changing wardrobe (even her Coyote Ugly outfit left me speechless!), makes her the epitome of an excellent parody Housewife. Her outfits – Drew wasn’t far behind Kelli in this category for worst look – are now more akin to costumes than casual wear, a stark contrast to the sophisticated looks from seasons past.
Instead of directly questioning Porsha about marriage poaching, Kelli has mostly stayed out of the heated discussions, adding humor to the show with her dramatic responses. This works well for her character, as a little bit can create a big impact. The roles of stirring up conflict fall to Drew and Angela, who are crucial in creating the ideal cast mix. Arriving in Nashville despite “thinking” about not coming (which is a tactful way of saying she wasn’t invited), Drew takes the least desirable room without complaint, even when faced with bunk beds. She promptly dives into the day’s events, joining Cynthia, Brit, and Angela for a whiskey tasting, while Shamea, Porsha, and Kelli head to the well-known Coyote Ugly bar.
As a dedicated fan, I’m finding it hard to believe how integral Cynthia has become in the revamped formula of RHOA for me. She’s not just a main cast member anymore; she feels more like a trusted friend. In this new season, Cynthia is bridging the gap between old and new RHOA, acting as both a voice of calm and a spark of mischief. During each episode, she navigates from one conversation to another, stirring pots with subtle inquiries, a pre-approved list of questions, and a few witty remarks to keep the humor afloat. At the whiskey tasting event, Cynthia manages to put things into perspective when Brit discusses lingering feelings from the Peace Brunch. Brit expresses her wish for more support from the group after the incident, but Angela reminds everyone that Brit’s behavior at the brunch wasn’t exactly “appropriate for a pizza party,” as they say on RHOBH.
In a bold, vintage fashion reminiscent of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” Cynthia delivers a strong message: “It’s not for you all to dictate how she should enter a brunch after such an incident. Unless any of you have been in a similar situation, publicly humiliated like that, don’t approach me until it happens to you.” This statement evoked a longing in me for a moment when Nene and Cynthia are friends once more, gossiping over Kenya’s questionable behavior – we would have had endless memes from it. And indeed, Cynthia’s words hold truth; let’s show Brit a modicum of compassion given the ordeal she endured, an experience no woman should ever have to face. Later, Angela and Drew express their regret for hurting Brit’s feelings, and Brit accepts, understanding the others’ viewpoints. Eventually, all agree to move past this incident.
It appears that among the group, it’s only Porsha who seems to be underperforming, struggling significantly during what could have been a powerful return. Following a confirmation that Dennis continued filming despite Porsha asking him not to, she walks into the final dinner in Nashville much like she started this season – lacking energy, displaying passive-aggressiveness, showing little enthusiasm, and carrying the weight of an uninspiring relationship. While everyone else is filled with cheer before sitting down for dinner, Porsha makes her way downstairs, dampening the atmosphere. Shamea comments in a confessional that Porsha’s attire, all black and paired with flats, seems to need only a ski mask to complete the look. Quite surprising!
In my opinion, during dinner, instead of getting embroiled in a heated debate with overly enthusiastic Drew, who seemed ready for a full-blown argument, Porsha decided to step back and avoid any discussions, citing exhaustion as her reason. The rest of the ladies continued their conversation, essentially rehashing what they had discussed during the whiskey tasting. Brit accused Angela of creating drama and then feigning shock when she was called out for it. At Coyote Ugly, Porsha labeled this behavior as gaslighting, a term she might have learned from social media discussions without fully understanding its definition. Perhaps Drew could help clarify it for her later, given her expertise on the subject.
When Angela queries why she’s singled out for messiness while Kelli started causing trouble from day one, Porsha vaguely responds, “I can’t recall.” Unfazed by Porsha’s evasiveness, Angela poses the question to the entire group. Meanwhile, Porsha retorts with a “kiss my butt” remark. In the meantime, Drew, eager for some attention, seizes the moment and delivers an impromptu speech, having no intention of letting this chance to shine slip away. After all, she’s been rehearsing her speech on the flight here!
Drew lifts her glass for a toast, implying that she wasn’t invited and politely asking Porsha if it’s alright for her to be there. Porsha responds in a curt manner, saying “You straight,” and Drew interprets this as an opportunity to leave the dinner. This whole situation is quite dramatic, but it’s not exactly mature. Instead of addressing Drew’s actions directly, Porsha talks about her problems with the men in her life in the confessional (she should have addressed Drew instead). She then criticizes Drew for meddling with Dennis and causing a scene at her birthday dinner. This is a rookie mistake; she should focus on confronting Drew instead of blaming others, especially the men in her life.
Behind the camera’s lens, it appears that Porsha may not be delivering much content. However, as the episode reaches its close, she delivers something intriguing for the production team. To celebrate her birthday, Porsha, Shamea, Brit, Kelli, and Cynthia were seen popping champagne bottles, showering each other with cash, and dancing provocatively by the pool. By 2:30 a.m., filming concluded, but some production cameras, along with Angela’s quick-witted phone recording, managed to capture snippets of their intoxicated conversation. Upon hearing her name, Angela started listening in on what she calls “Porsha’s real self” being revealed. She overhears them criticizing her and her outfit, and when she hears Porsha allegedly say, “I should sleep with Charles,” she decides to record the conversation further.
Indeed, you’ve got it right! Mrs. Steal Your Man, Porsha, was jokingly discussing infidelity, welcoming her back to the scene. Angela captures the conversation for slightly longer before approaching the women directly. Porsha denies all accusations and departs, but Kelli steps in with a helpful comment during her interview, reminding us of a past conversation where Porsha said, “She had better stop or I’ll sleep with her husband.” Angela humorously replies, “Take heed when Porsha expresses a desire to be with your husband because, as we’ve seen in the past, she will indeed be with your husband.” Angela departs early in the morning, but it seems that tensions may escalate upon their return to Atlanta.
Peach Tea To-Go
As a die-hard movie buff, it’s clear that Shamea stands firm as Porsha’s ally – their dynamic at Coyote Ugly hints at a past collaboration, as the way Angela positioned Drew against Porsha seems to be a recurring act. I can’t wait to see how they twist the gossip they shared about Charles being streetwise. Porsha is already shaping her side of the story in interviews by focusing on Angela’s “creepy” behavior for filming them, rather than admitting to their chatty nature.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching Cynthia console Porsha following dinner. From shedding her false eyelashes to jesting about removing her wig, it truly brought back nostalgic feelings. I burst out laughing when Cynthia, in a tipsy state, suggested they pray together. Despite being tired of Cynthia by the end of her last full-time season, now that she seems like a benevolent Bravo fairy godmother, appearing on different shows (her appearance on Love Hotel will be quite unexpected, but I can’t wait), I have grown fond of her again.
