Will Kirk Inherit The Enterprise From Pike?

In two distinct “Star Trek” continuities, Captain James T. Kirk experienced two different transfers of command for the USS Enterprise; such occurrences among Enterprise captains are relatively uncommon. Typically, either the ship is destroyed, its previous captain perishes, or a significant span of time elapses before we witness another change in leadership for the starship.

In the Star Trek universe, Captain Kirk is known for not only receiving command of the USS Enterprise but also passing it on across different films.

Kirk Has Been Part Of 2 USS Enterprise Captain Successions

Captain Kirk Has Both Passed & Received Command Of The Enterprise

2009’s reboot of Star Trek, taking place in an alternate timeline known as the Kelvin Timeline, offers a standout instance of the USS Enterprise’s succession. In this case, Admiral Christopher Pike (portrayed by Bruce Greenwood) hands over his starship to Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine). As a rebellious Starfleet Academy student, Kirk bravely led the Enterprise in battling the time-traveling Romulan antagonist, Nero (played by Eric Bana). Notably, an amusing dialog exchange occurred between Kirk and Pike when Kirk declared, “I relieve you, sir,” to which Pike retorted with a wink, “I am relieved.

In the movie “Star Trek Generations,” Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) attended the debut of the USS Enterprise-B. This wasn’t a formal handover of the Enterprise captaincy, as there was no exchange of command codes between Kirk and Captain John Harriman (Alan Ruck). Instead, Kirk, along with Commander Pavel Chekov (Walter Koenig) and Scotty (James Doohan), were present in a ceremonial role. Essentially, Kirk symbolically passed the mantle to Harriman.

In two other “Star Trek” movies, it was Admiral James T. Kirk who took over command of the USS Enterprise from its previous commanders. He displaced Captain Will Decker (Stephen Collins) from the captain’s chair in “Star Trek: The Motion Picture.” However, in “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,” Captain Spock (Leonard Nimoy) willingly handed the Enterprise back to Admiral Kirk, reminding him that being a starship commander was his primary and best calling.

Captain Picard & Jellico Passed USS Enterprise-D To Each Other

“Chain of Command” Showed How The Enterprise-D Is Transferred Between Captains

In the two-part episode “Chain of Command” from Star Trek: The Next Generation’s sixth season, Captain Picard formally handed over command of the USS Enterprise-D to Captain Edward Jellico (Ronny Cox). This was done through a ceremony where Picard donned his dress uniform and officially transferred the Enterprise’s command codes to Jellico, symbolizing the passing of leadership. The episode showcased the process by which the starship is transitioned from one captain to another in the Starfleet hierarchy.

Although Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Commander William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) worked side by side on the USS Enterprise-D and E for a combined 15 years, Picard never officially handed over command to Riker on a permanent basis. Instead, Riker received a promotion to captain the USS Titan in “Star Trek: Nemesis.” During the episodes of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” titled “The Best of Both Worlds,” Riker served as Acting Captain because Picard had been assimilated by the Borg and transformed into Locutus.

Will Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Show Pike’s Enterprise Succession To Kirk?

Maybe This Is How Strange New Worlds Will End

In the new series, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, we see Lieutenant James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) being introduced, setting up the storyline for how he takes over command of the USS Enterprise from Captain Pike, as depicted in Star Trek’s primary timeline. Previously, in Star Trek: The Original Series, Kirk was already established as captain and had a brief encounter with Fleet Captain Pike (Sean Kinney) before an unfortunate delta ray accident left Chris disfigured.

In contrast to earlier portrayals, the television series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has redefined the relationship between characters Kirk and Pike. Here, Lieutenant Kirk serves as the First Officer aboard the USS Farragut, frequently visiting the Starship Enterprise. The show is set to extend into seasons 3 and 4, and perhaps beyond, leaving open the possibility of further episodes. It remains unclear if Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will depict the significant event in canon where Kirk relieves Pike as Captain of the Enterprise before the prequel series concludes.
