Once again, “Sinners” ruled the box office in its second weekend, raking in an astounding $45 million. Compared to its initial $48 million haul, the drop was minimal at just 6%, which is remarkable for a horror movie – a genre notorious for experiencing a significant decline after the opening weekend. I’m genuinely impressed by this film’s ability to hold its own in its second outing!
To date, “Sinners” has earned $122.5 million in North America and $161.6 million worldwide, surpassing its $90 million production budget. The film’s positive critical acclaim and audience excitement appear poised to maintain its momentum at the domestic box office, especially as the summer blockbuster season begins. Over the recent weekend, the vampire thriller directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan held its ground amidst several new films making their debut on the big screen.
Following a tight competition, it appears that “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith” is edging out “The Accountant 2” in the race for the runner-up position on the box office rankings.
Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith,” being re-released for its space opera prequel’s 20th anniversary by Disney, grossed $25.2 million from 2,775 screens. Additionally, it made another $17 million overseas, totaling a global sum of $42 million over the weekend. This is remarkable earnings for a film that has been easily accessible for home viewing for twenty years. Indeed, the Force remains powerful.
In third place, “The Accountant 2” earned approximately $24.5 million from 3,610 theaters. This is a decent opening for an R-rated action drama targeted at more mature audiences. However, with a substantial production cost of $80 million, the sequel must appeal to audiences worldwide in order to cover its budget.
The upcoming movie titled ‘The Accountant 2,’ produced by Amazon MGM, is the second installment of the 2016 film ‘The Accountant.’ The initial release garnered an unadjusted box office revenue of $24.7 million and went on to make a total of $155 million worldwide. Given that its production cost was double the original’s $45 million budget, ‘The Accountant 2’ will need to surpass its predecessor’s earnings (and substantially so) to be deemed successful. It’s important to note that box office revenues are typically shared between studios and cinema owners.
I found myself thoroughly captivated by “The Accountant 2,” directed once again by Gavin O’Connor, the mastermind behind the original film. The movie has earned an impressive “A-” rating on CinemaScore exit surveys, which is a promising sign for its potential success through word of mouth. In this sequel, Ben Affleck reprises his role as the gifted accountant with autism spectrum disorder who joins forces with his long-lost brother, played by Jon Bernthal, to chase down a group of enigmatic assassins following the unraveling of a lethal conspiracy.
The Minecraft film, titled ‘A Minecraft Movie,’ slipped to fourth position in its fourth week of release, taking in a substantial $20 million. This Warner Bros. production, featuring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, currently ranks as the top-grossing Hollywood movie of 2021, earning $377 million domestically and an impressive $816 million worldwide.
2025 began slowly at the box office, but blockbusters such as “Sinners” and “Minecraft” have since reversed this trend. To demonstrate that things are improving, four movies made over $20 million last weekend, suggesting that movies of various genres can attract audiences. This has boosted revenues by 11% compared to 2024, though they’re still about 30% lower than in 2019, as reported by Comscore. Marvel’s “Thunderbolts” is expected to maintain this positive momentum when it opens next weekend.
According to senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian, Hollywood has been experiencing a particularly successful period in April, which comes as a refreshing shift after the disappointing box office results seen in March.
In fifth position, Sony’s R-rated horror movie “Until Dawn” debuted as anticipated, earning approximately $8 million from 3,055 screens domestically. Overseas, it brought in an additional $10.1 million, totaling a global launch of $18.1 million. This ultra-grisly survival thriller had a relatively low budget of $15 million, meaning it doesn’t need much more revenue to become profitable during its theatrical release. Unfortunately, this is beneficial news as both critics and audiences have been unimpressed with the film, which currently has a 51% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a “C+” grade from CinemaScore.
In the ninth position, “The Legend of Ochi,” a fresh production by A24, garnered $1.4 million from 1,153 different locations in its debut. Isaiah Saxon directed this $10 million movie that tells the story of a timid farm girl who develops a strong connection with an injured baby ochi, a rare and feared animal species she had been raised to dread.
