In 2020, when Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney declared their intention to buy a Welsh soccer team, many people found it hard to believe. It seemed absurd – similar to Colin Jost and Pete Davidson buying a Staten Island ferry – considering their ambitious plan to elevate the fifth-rank club to the elite Premier League. Now, after another promotion for Wrexham Red Dragons, that goal is becoming more realistic, and Reynolds couldn’t help but reminisce about their initial pitch meeting.
Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have been documenting their journey with the Wrexham AFC on the FX docuseries Welcome to Wrexham (streaming with a Hulu subscription), and it looks like the show will have quite an exciting fourth season when it hits the 2025 TV schedule in May. That’s because on April 26, the team earned its third-straight promotion and are now just one tier away from the Premier League. Reynolds celebrated with an emotional Instagram post that includes a bevy of photos.
Blake Lively joyfully celebrated with her husband and the actor from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” after their team secured a 3-0 win against Charlton Athletic at home, ensuring their spot in the EFL Championship League for the first time since the 1981-82 season. In a lengthy post, Ryan Reynolds reminisced about people not taking him and Rob McElhenney seriously five years ago. He penned:
We’ve been associated with Wrexham for a moment that feels like just a blink, yet so much has transpired. I recall the initial press conference, where they inquired about our objectives… and I believe it was Rob who quickly responded, ‘The Premier League.’ Everyone chuckled at the time. They had every reason to do so. It seemed preposterous… But we were serious about it.
The actors plunged headfirst into the deep waters, taking significant steps and frequently investing substantial amounts to boost the club’s progression. Even Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively bought a residence in the Welsh village of Marford, aiming to be nearer to the team. Reynolds himself expressed his sense of belonging there, further stating in his post:
The Stadium seems like a spiritual sanctuary, where I’ve come to know countless individuals. Since February 2021, I’ve witnessed babies grow into regular attendees. Regrettably, some of these regulars have bid us farewell permanently. We’ve been privileged to spread the remains of dearly loved ones across that field. In fact, I’ve seen every free hand clear snow from the pitch to prevent match cancellations.
Some of the images reveal the depth of feeling this promotion holds for the supporters, as they’re shown rushing onto the field after Wrexham’s win and igniting flares. The proprietors (alongside Blake Lively) captured moments with the team and fans, autographing merchandise and posing for selfies. In his heartfelt missive to the Welsh football club, Ryan Reynolds concluded by penning:
The sentiment expressed is that the Welsh have a dual nature, being both poetic and combative in spirit, which the speaker finds appealing. They wish for others to experience the charm of Wrexham, a place in Wales.)
He presents a compelling argument for it without a doubt. The Red Dragons clinched their move up to League Two in 2023, which resulted in an emotional scene caught on camera between the team’s Hollywood owners. In April 2024 they secured their position in League One, resulting in this year’s remarkable third consecutive promotion to the second-ranked Championship.
