My Kid Roasted Me for Showing Them Armageddon

Among Ben Affleck’s impressive movie portfolio, where he’s both starred and directed, only a select few have left a lasting impact in pop culture like Michael Bay’s 1998 sci-fi catastrophe film, “Armageddon”. It’s boisterous, it’s preposterously entertaining, yet despite being one of the top ’90s films, it’s a testament to the senseless blockbuster movie-making of that time. Interestingly, even Affleck’s son seems to find amusement in poking fun at him about this film.

Ben Affleck recently sat down on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” to discuss his upcoming film releases in 2025, including “The Accountant 2.” During the interview, he shared anecdotes about his children attending the movie’s premiere. The actor-turned-director expressed that it was a unique experience for them to view him as someone who had done something impressive. However, showing his kids one of his ’90s blockbusters like “Armageddon” didn’t go as planned. To his surprise, his children, particularly his son Samuel, criticized the movie fiercely, ruining what he intended to be a fun and nostalgic bonding moment.

During the COVID period, all children were at home and I suggested, ‘How about we watch a movie together?’ The thought crossed my mind that they might enjoy ‘Armageddon.’ Almost as soon as it started, there was a response of ‘This is ridiculous! Are you serious?’ My son expressed his opinion saying, ‘It doesn’t make sense!’ I replied, ‘This isn’t a film based on logic. That wasn’t one of the considerations during its production.’

If you recognize the famous disaster film from 1998, then you can understand his point. The idea of sending ordinary oil rig workers into space to prevent an asteroid impact is questionable even with a minimal examination. Yet, who else besides Neil deGrasse Tyson would take on the topic of Armageddon? Despite its implausibility, its unabashed sincerity might be what makes it appealing. It’s a quintessential popcorn movie filled with massive explosions, Aerosmith soundtracks, dramatically patriotic scenes, and dramatic slow-motion shots of the star-studded cast.

More on Ben Affleck

‘Ben Affleck clarifies that he drew a firm boundary when it came to spending $6,000 on shoes for his child, as he prefers focusing on other items in his closet instead.’

As a film enthusiast, I must admit that today’s youngsters have grown up immersed in more down-to-earth science fiction, from movies like Interstellar to The Martian, where authenticity (or at least a believable representation) is key. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that Affleck’s son was inquisitive, and not just a little bit – he had a plethora of questions!

It’s clear that the previous “Justice League” actor doesn’t appear to be on the defensive about it at all. Instead, he seemed genuinely amused by his child’s roasting. This kind of self-awareness is what has won him over with fans for years. Affleck has discussed his experience working on the Michael Bay film before, particularly during a renowned DVD commentary track where he openly pokes fun at the movie’s reasoning. (If you haven’t heard it yet, take a moment to watch the clip below. It’s priceless.) So it’s nothing new that he isn’t all of a sudden claiming it was a masterpiece.

Throughout a versatile film career encompassing Academy Award-winning dramas and blockbuster superhero films, the movie Armageddon serves as an encapsulation of a specific era in Hollywood. During this time, visual appeal rather than physics, science, or credibility ruled supreme. Frankly, I’m all for it! Sure, it’s over-the-top, but it’s also the kind of film that’s sheer entertainment, whether you’re enjoying its humor or mocking it. Interestingly, in the Affleck family, it seems to be a mix of both laughter and criticism.
