Josh Radnor Speaks Out on Fan Backlash Over Ted Mosby Role in HIMYM

Josh Radnor, the actor who portrayed Ted Mosby throughout the entire run of CBS’s popular sitcom “How I Met Your Mother” (from 2005 to 2014), acknowledges that viewers had a strong emotional response to his character. Looking back and reflecting on his role, he continues to grapple with the criticisms leveled at Ted’s actions during the series. Alongside Radnor, the show featured Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, Alyson Hannigan, and Neil Patrick Harris.

During an episode of his podcast, Radnor stated that he wasn’t responsible for the actions of his character and had no control over them because “How I Met Your Mother” was a heavily scripted show. Essentially, when people want to criticize him for something Ted did, he would respond by saying, “I was contractually bound to perform those actions. It’s my job.

Radnor shared with his podcast listeners that he simply followed the scripts provided. “My role is to be honest and make these stories come alive. It’s not my place to change the script and decide, ‘I believe this is how it should go instead,'” he explained.

Radnor on Not Wanting to Write for the Series

Although Jack Radnor has penned two movies, namely “Happythankyoumoreplease” from 2010 and “Liberal Arts” in 2012, he confessed that he wasn’t keen on joining the writing team for “How I Met Your Mother.” His former co-star, Jason Segel, who is now starring in and co-creating the series, concurred with his sentiment at the time.

I’m the one who creates my own works, but Jason and I have discussed this topic numerous times. We both enjoy writing scripts. We didn’t believe we’d excel as writers for How I Met Your Mother,” Radnor clarified. “The ideas primarily came from Craig (Thomas) and Carter (Bays), the show creators, and the rest of the writing team. It was a unique universe with its own set of rules and internal logic. We were merely part of it, but we weren’t in control,” Radnor added.

Radnor: “I’m Interested in the Mechanics”

Despite not being involved in writing for “How I Met Your Mother”, Radnor expressed his fascination with the process. He mentioned, “It’s challenging for me to watch things without trying to peek under the hood and catch a glimpse of the clever ways they’re developing characters or bringing them back, and finding humor in callbacks.

Radnor mentioned that he was focused on his role as an actor while on set, wearing his “actor’s hat.” Yet, on a more subconscious level, he was also learning and observing the mechanics of the production process.

Since finishing “How I Met Your Mother,” Radnor has taken on roles in various projects. These include the Prime Video series “Hunters” alongside Al Pacino, a 2025 short film titled “The Sacrifice,” and a 2025 feature film called “Romona at Midlife” where he starred alongside Rosemarie DeWitt, who is known for her role in “Smile 2.”

How I Met Your Mother is streaming on Netflix and Hulu.
