Shiny Entertainment, a renowned video game development studio, is not unfamiliar to gaming enthusiasts who appreciate the evolution of the industry. The team has etched their name into history with groundbreaking projects that have gained cult status. One such project was MDK, an innovative shooter game boasting numerous unique features that could be utilized to develop multiple distinct games from a single base. Let’s revisit how Shiny Entertainment solidified its place in the gaming industry.
Shooter, but not only
Starting off, I pointed out that MDK was remarkably diverse, even to an extreme degree. So, let’s delve into the gameplay concepts born from the minds of Shiny Entertainment that made up this unique title. In every mission within MDK, the journey began with entering the planet’s atmosphere. The protagonist, Kurt Hectic, was leaping from space much earlier than Felix Baumgartner gained fame for his similar stunt. Unlike his successor, this character had to steer clear of radar detection. If detected, missiles would be targeted at him, and he needed to evade them skillfully to ensure a safe landing.
Upon setting foot on land, our hero sprang immediately into business. While primarily engaged in combat with adversaries, Kurt had a few surprises hidden, ready to be unveiled. He seized opportunities to display his acrobatics on snowboards, skillfully maneuvering around barriers, defeating opponents, and even piloting an aircraft.
Regardless, the battle held significant importance within MDK. Unsurprisingly, Hectic wasn’t unprepared. Equipped with specialized armor, Kurt was shielded from the intense heat upon re-entry and bulletproof.
Two guns in one and a big zoom
The jumpsuit served dual purposes, for it concealed a built-in machine gun. In a flash, the wearer could detach this firearm and affix it to the helmet, converting it into an exceptionally powerful sniper rifle. Notably, this wasn’t an ordinary sniper rifle; its magnification was a staggering hundredfold. Remarkably, even today, this level of zoom still holds appeal. Moreover, MDK was among the pioneers in introducing such advanced features in gaming.
An additional point is that due to the use of a sniper rifle, Kurt was able to avoid face-to-face fighting, instead eliminating enemies from a secure vantage point. Yet, this wasn’t without its challenges, as focusing on a target with a sniper rifle limited his mobility, leaving him exposed to incoming fire.
Let’s discuss “Close Combat Cameras” or simply “CloCam.” These cameras offer a unique perspective, closely following our shots as they strike their targets and demonstrate the resulting impact. Additionally, it’s worth noting that this sniper rifle can be equipped with various types of ammunition, ranging from self-guided projectiles to mortar rounds.
Rest of the pieces
Indeed, Kurt’s equipment is quite versatile. Not only does his suit have a parachute for safe landings from high places or maneuvering through air vents, but it also conceals some unique explosive devices. One noteworthy feature was… let me put it this way, the “most intriguing bomb ever,” which attracted adversaries and allowed Hectic to trigger it remotely, sending them fleeing. Additionally, our hero carried a portable bomb capable of summoning an air strike over a designated location. To top it off, he had the world’s smallest nuclear device at his disposal.
War of the Worlds
Clearly, there was no shortage of activities in the game MDK. While the gameplay took center stage in Shiny Entertainment’s creation, it also featured an engaging narrative and a unique brand of humor that added flavor to the tale.
Kurt Hectic wasn’t your typical superhero or even a conventional hero. He was simply a janitor who happened to be in the right (or wrong) place at the right (or wrong) time. One day, Earth was under attack by extraterrestrial beings, as their massive spaceships began stripping our planet of its valuable resources while suppressing any human resistance. With the destruction of our planet appearing imminent, an eccentric scientist named Dr. Fluke Hawkins, a robot known as Bones, a six-legged canine called Max, and Kurt found themselves standing up against these invaders.
The primary objectives in later MDK missions centered around penetrating and disabling individual spacecraft. For Kurt, this meant gaining access to the cockpit (leaving behind a trail of space crew remains and occasionally solving mysteries) and eliminating the alien operator. Yet, this was just the beginning; Hectic still had to navigate through an energy beam, which ensnared both him and the spaceship during the course of the mission.
What was after MDK?
In 1997, the game known as MDK was introduced on personal computers and the initial PlayStation, garnering widespread acclaim from both gamers and critics. Among the gaming community, it swiftly developed a devoted cult fanbase, while critics, particularly those focusing on the PC version, highly praised it, earning an average rating of 89/100 from GameRankings.
Seizing the moment, the developers had a chance to… but not this instance. Following the release of MDK, the studio responsible for it, Shiny Entertainment, ventured into different projects; in addition, some of its team members departed to found Planet Moon Studios and create games like Giants: Citizen Kabuto or Armed & Dangerous.
As a gamer, I can say that despite Shiny Entertainment’s franchise seemingly reaching an end, its legacy was passed on to BioWare. This studio brought us MDK 2 in 2000 for PC (later released for PS2 in 2001 and Nintendo Wii in 2011). While it didn’t quite match the innovative spirit of the original game, MDK 2 still held onto a high standard of quality.
Concerning Shiny Entertainment, following the launch of this game, they went on to produce several other projects. Notably, Messiah and Sacrifice stood out as the most prominent among them.
How to play MDK today?
For personal computers, MDK can be purchased on Steam and GOG, with each copy priced at $9.99. Despite the fact that the artwork inspired by H.R. Giger has shown signs of aging, its distinctive design coupled with varied gameplay tends to distract players from its minor flaws.
What does MDK mean?
For a while, there was much debate about the true meaning behind the game’s title. Some believed it to be “Murder, Death, Kill,” while others thought it represented “Mission: Deliver Kindness” (as stated in the game manual). Still, others suggested that it referred to the main characters, Max, Doctor Hawkins, and Kurt. Other proposed interpretations included “Mother’s Day Kisses” and “My Dear Knight.” However, it wasn’t until 2011 that one of the developers of the game MDK, Nick Bruty, confirmed that the official abbreviation for MDK is indeed “Murder, Death, Kill.
