The expansive multiverse scenarios presented in “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” might not be sufficient to bring about a Marvel Cinatic Universe (MCU) crossover following “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” As the Multiverse Saga nears its grand finale, both “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” promise an epic collision of characters from various realms within the Marvel multiverse. The official cast listing for “Avengers: Doomsday” indicates that mutants from the Fox’s X-Men films will interact with the new Avengers, the reformed Thunderbolts, and the Fantastic Four.
The movie “Avengers: Secret Wars” could manage a similar spectacular event by reintroducing Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as Spider-Men, Nicolas Cage as Ghost Rider, and the two versions of the Fantastic Four from Fox, among other multiverse Marvel characters. Characters like Wesley Snipes’ Blade, Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool, who were absent in the cast announcement for “Avengers: Doomsday”, might also reappear to join the battle against Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. However, while “Avengers: Secret Wars” may satisfy many fans’ dreams of crossovers, it might not include some eagerly anticipated pairings.
Robert Downey Jr.βs Tony Stark And Pedro Pascalβs Reed Richards May Never Meet
Downey’s Iron Man Is Unlikely To Return Just To Team Up With Pedro Pascal’s Mister Fantastic
In the upcoming movie “Avengers: Doomsday,” we’ll see Robert Downey Jr. reprising his character Doctor Doom, a few years after his last portrayal of Iron Man. Meanwhile, the main team in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” will debut on Earth-616 following their initial appearance in the alternate timeline of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” However, it’s unlikely that both “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” will feature Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards and Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark together, as there’s not much opportunity for Downey to reprise his original Marvel Cinematic Universe role.
Should Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man make an appearance in both “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”, there might not be enough time for him to collaborate fully with characters such as Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Ben Grimm, and Johnny Storm. The roster of “Avengers: Doomsday” boasts at least twenty-seven significant characters, with more still unannounced. Given that “Avengers: Secret Wars” could potentially have a cast even larger than both “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Endgame’s” thirty-eight-character final confrontation, a dedicated film is warranted for an authentic Iron Man and Mister Fantastic collaboration.
The MCUβs Tony Stark Missed A Big Part Of His Comic Book Alliances
Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man Interacted With Many Of Marvel’s Greatest Minds
It’s true that Iron Man, played by Robert Downey Jr., has had one of the longest and most comprehensive arcs within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, it’s worth noting that Tony Stark, Iron Man himself, didn’t have any on-screen interactions with characters such as Hank Pym, Shuri, Namor, or Riri Williams. Additionally, he never shared a universe with characters like Pedro Pascal, John Krasinski, or Ioan Gruffud’s Reed Richards, nor did he encounter any of Patrick Stewart’s Professor X variants on-screen. Despite being teammates during Captain America: Civil War and fighting Thanos alongside T’Challa in Avengers: Endgame, they never exchanged a word of dialogue with each other on-screen.
In the source material, Iron Man maintains a multifaceted relationship with some of the brightest minds globally. Frequently, Tony Stark finds himself at odds with other intellectuals in the comics, but they ultimately collaborate to make crucial decisions for Earth’s safety. The original Illuminati team in Marvel Comics consisted of Iron Man, Mister Fantastic, Professor X, Black Panther, Black Bolt, and Doctor Strange, who united secretly to protect the world. In the MCU, however, Iron Man primarily interacts with Doctor Strange and Bruce Banner as genius-level heroes.
A Tony Stark And Reed Richards Team-Up Can Still Happen, But Not With Robert Downey Jr.
Iron Man And Mister Fantastic May Only Be Able To Meet After An MCU Reboot
It appears highly unlikely that Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards will share a screen together in the near future within the current Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but it’s not impossible for alternate versions of these characters to collaborate. In much the same way, the upcoming film Avengers: Secret Wars may pave the way for an overarching reboot of the MCU, resulting in a new universe where all Marvel heroes have existed together since the beginning. If this happens, Iron Man might encounter numerous characters he previously couldn’t interact with during the Infinity Saga, including Reed Richards.
It’s highly unlikely that Robert Downey Jr. will return to play Iron Man in the MCU following a reboot. His character’s ending in Avengers: Endgame was a fitting goodbye, and a reboot would likely introduce a fresh take on the Avengers with minimal ties to the original cast. Characters like Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards, who are more recently introduced, have a better chance of surviving the reboot. The groundwork for this significant shift might be laid in future films such as Avengers: Doomsday, Avengers: Secret Wars, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
